I wrote a big long post before, but stupidly closed the browser before posting , so I'll be brief.

I've been refurbishing an old 'Tiny' PC as a lite gaming server (P3 600Mhz 128MB SDRAM).

I wanted some more RAM to smoothen the processes running on the machine, so inserted a spare 64MB stick I had. This worked fine and performance was increased. I then removed this as I needed it short term for something else.

When I was able to return this 64Mb stick to the server, the problems started. When booting up after placing the new RAM stick in the second DIMM slot, the exact same configuration as had worked previously, the system simply would not POST/boot/show any signs of visual life. All the power was on, the fans were turning etc, but nothing else.

I tried rearanging the RAM sticks and tried a number of different combinations separately and together. Strangely, the system would boot maybe 1 in every 10 attemps, althought these did not seem to relate to any specific RAM configuration. It seemed more as if the successful boots were triggered by the fact that I had CHANGED the RAM configuration, rather than them being a result of a specific configuration.

Even on successful boots, the OS will tend to freeze after 5min or so.

How can the simple addition of a RAM stick have caused this, even when using the original 1-RAM stick config? Especially when it was perfectly fine the first time with the new stick added. And why the erratic booting success that seems to have no relation to anything?

I'm very confused.

Your help is really appreciated.

All the best,
Tim
