1 x Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 600W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £65.99
1 x Zalman Z9 Plus Tower Case with Fan Controller - Black £44.99
1 x Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9) £43.19
1 x Alpenföhn Matterhorn Pure Edition CPU Cooler (Socket LGA2011/1366/1155/1156/775/ AMD AM3/AM3+/AM2/AM2+/FM1) £26.39
1 x TP-Link 300Mbps Wireless N PCI Express Adapter (TL-WN881ND) £16.99
Total : £445.52 (includes shipping : FREE).

I used the OEM CPU as currently it is a lot cheaper. The stock heatsink is literally worth a couple of quid, yes the retail CPU has a 3 year warranty but in my eperience failure of the CPU is very very rare. The difference in price helped pay for that excellent heatsink which is a bargain whilst on offer ;) The mobo doesn't do xfire properly so is a single GPU mobo. GB offer a 3 year UK based warranty :)

I've bought a few of these CM PSUs. They are modular, very quiet (comes with rubber padding for dampening) and has ample power for a single GPU setup. Worth noting here that Ivybridge uses less power than sandybridge.

I also own the Z9 case. It's a excellent "starters case". It includes an extension for the P4/8 PSU lead to help with the cable management. This and the four 120mm fans must be worth £25 alone. I have made a few tweaks to mine, if you are interested I will divulge the info

big up M_C lol :D.

if budget is tight i'd really consider sticking with the antec 900 (unless you REALLY hate it) and putting the money used for a case towards the gfx card, difference involved will be able to put you up from a 560ti to an ati 7850 /nvidia 570.

OK after much hand wringing etc I have decided to pull the trigger on the above spec. Very excited. As promised will post lots of pic's and take you through the build as soon as I get it up and running.

Thanks for the help all.

Sorry to revive an old thread. For usual reasons my purchase got delayed but I now have the shekels sitting in my account and am ready to press the button. To recap I have the following;

GPU: We have a GPU, 8800GT 512MB which I want to use initially until more cash becomes available (month or two) and I can upgrade to a card around the £150 mark (not to be included in budget for this build).
Drive: HD Seagate 500Gig Sata-2
Screen: Our screen is a 22” Samsung that goes to x1050.
Drives: Optical Drive we have a Sata one. Again will purchase a SSD in due course but not needed for the build (not to be included in budget for this build).
OS: Will use Win8 if I can get the iso onto a memory stick or burn to disk or alternatively if I can plead with Microsoft will get new key for a copy of Win 7 that I have from a broken laptop. Have all the disks but know is OEM copy. I know a long shot but either way won't need OS for now.

Keyboard, Speakers, mouse etc are all here.

Below is what is in my basket. Let me know what you think. Machine is for gaming mainly. FPS & Guild Wars2 type games.
Budget.. well as you can see from this, money is tight so want to get most bang for buck and can add new GPU & SSD in due course.

Only thing I have left out is case. I would love the Z9 Plus as looks exactly what i need and would be easy for a relative noob to work with, however out of stock for a few weeks now so need to look elsewhere. Remember this is for a 14 year old boy so the tackier with lights and go-fast stripes the better as far as he is concerned. What I am saying is case doesn't have to adhere to normal taste rules..

The D3H is a good starter mobo. I'll use the mATX Asrock mobo as it is spec'd better (SLI/Xfire capable,THX rated audio) and the colour scheme i hope you'll like ;)

I own the Z9 plus. It's a great starters case for building.....lots of kit for the price. It has it's quirks, I'm happy to make suggestions to help you get the most from it. I'll link some alternatives he might like too.

its due "soon" lol whatever soon means

The case is for a teenager. To be honest I think my other suggestions were a lil too refined (for lack of a better word).

The Z9 is great for the cash, the CM has a 200mm fan for the intake which will suck in plenty of air quietly. It has a proper window on it (the Z9 mesh on the side lets dust in and dust gets trapped in the mesh, I need to get around to cutting it out). The CM also has USB3 ports over the Z9 too, however it is more cash.

does look nice in white, that dust filter wont stay white long :p
.....btw you can install windows8 from desktop, they have an app to do that or you can just use magicdisc tools
i was going to say something else but i forgot

a more emo/goth case perhaps? lol

Haha as I thought he loved it. However I have managed to source a Z9 plus elsewhere so that will at least not drive me nuts when I am using it.. :)

OK pressing the button. Thanks for all the suggestions and help, it is really appreciated. Will post once I get the parts together. Will need lots of help on this one :)

Z9 is much better and is around the same price as that eye sore elsewhere. As I said I have the Z9 and I'm happy to give some advice as I own one and have built many a PC into one. I'll keep an eye out for you in the future

plus bought a K9 plus away...

Roll on Wednesday evening when I get in from work. Think a decent desk would be sensible to put all this kit on and also be useful to build it on... Is the IKEA still the way to go? Can't remember the name... Lots of the setups on the Show your kit forum post used it...

Hi, Going to start building later. All parts recieved and all looks good. My main question is around my re-use of a hard drive from my old machine. The drive is fairly full of stuff I don't really want to lose.
I have a copy of Win 8 on a memory stick so all set to go with that. Question is.. when i place & plug in the old HDD will i get an option to partion a section of it that I can install the OS to or will the whole drive need to be formatted and wiped and then it installs Win 8 from the memory stick?

back up your data first.
if your hdd is already partitioned, you can choose to delete the windows partition and install win 8 on that. (if not iirc you have to format the lot)
