New Rig Advice Needed

Hey all,

I've decided I want to pick up a new system. Currently have a 650 budget but I could stretch a little bit if needed.

I have a brand new copy of windows 8.1, along with monitor keyboard etc so I don't need any of those but everything else is going to be required.

I'd ideally like the build to fit in a bitfenix prodigy or a corsair cube but this isn't set in stone. One of the goals is to be able to run the Witcher 3 at 1080p and 60fps

My current rig is:
i7 3770K
(can't remember the exact motherboard)
7970
16gb of ram.
64gb ssd.

Is it even worth upgrading?

It's definitely not worth changing out the board, CPU and RAM, I'm thinking a GPU upgrade + larger SSD. Your current CPU is still a beast and you will have minimal gains from going to 3770k to 4790k or so on

Do you also have a CPU cooler, and what case/motherboard are you running as well as PSU?

I've currently gotten a H100i as my cooler. Power supply wise I'm running a XFX 750W black edition I think.

All of this is in a Fractal Define R4

What do you use this for? just games?

I would get a bigger SSD and a better GFX card.

What resolution is your monitor?

Okay cool

You have 295mm of space then with the top HDD cage in and 430mm without it in

I would look at a GPU upgrade first, 290X or 970 perhaps which are good for your 1080p playing, and then a new SSD like the 850 Evo 500GB that is on offer or 250GB perhaps?

The 970 currently is coming with Witcher 3 free if you don't already have it :)

Sounds like a plan. It would probably be worth holding off until the New AMD cards are out this summer wouldn't it?

Yeah mainly just games 99% of the time with some light application development.

Resolution I'm currently running 1920x1080 but I'm planning on picking up an ultrawide sometime soon

The new cards (AMD and 980ti) are due in June.

Ultrawide so 3440X1440?

Is your CPU overclocked?

You could wait for 390(X) but the 290X @ £250 is pretty unbeatable value atm
Do you have any sort of budget?

Yeah I'm currently sitting at 4ghz, I could probably push it a little bit further.

Budget for the entire rig was £650 - 700 ish so I can probably stretch to about £300 for a GPU now that I'm not building a whole machine.

Actually thinking of getting one of the 2560 x 1080 ones as the 1440P ones are much more expensive

290X or 970 sounds right up your street
Do you already have Witcher 3?

Trust me, I have a GTX980 (well two now) and play games at 3440X1440 on that screen, the single 980 on some games (BF4) I had to reduce a few settings to get really nice and competitive again.

Damn It's mighty tempting, It's a lot of cash to drop on a GPU though hence why I was thinking of waiting to see AMD's offering next month

Yes, wait, and see what price this 980ti comes out at (chances of it being less than a GTX980 are obviously zero, but maybe the GTX980 might come down to more sensible (release day) prices.

And if you were willing to spend £600 on a new rig, why not push the boat out more on a single GPU+monitor.

A bigger SSD now would be good and Gibbo only yesterday reduced prices of some of the Samsung 850 Evos.

Brilliant yeah I must pick up a new ssd.

The main reason I'm not going to push the boat out on a new gpu plus monitor is because I was planning on selling my pc to my brother to bring the cost down.
Have the gtx980 prices went up that much since launch?
