Hi All

Was wondering if you kind chaps could give me some help on building my new dream rig please :D
I am undecided which way to go with either Core 2 Duo E850 3ghz 1333fsb or the mighty Quad Extreme QX6850 3ghz 1333fsb.
The price leap is £400 + and with mainly been a games player and wanting to get ready for crysis , world in conflict , alan wake etc which way would you lot go ?
Pairing it up with Corsair 2gb DDR3 1333C9DHX and 2 8800 GTX Ultras in SLI

Cheers Chaps

What bits have you got already and will you be overclocking?

2 8800 Ultras in SLI is just a joke to tell you the truth. Not sure if Crysis will be optimized for SLI and if it isnt thats just a waste.

The QX850 is a waste aswell. You can clock the Q6600 to near QX6850 speeds.

And DRR3 is not worth it at this point in time. It dosent really offer anything over DRR2 not to justify the price of it anyway. You would be better of with 4GB of DRR2 memory.

Hi Stickroad

Thanks mate got no bits at all it will be a brand spanking new gaming PC and was going to get the new Asus P35 board that supports the 1333fsb and DDR3.
Would you go with a DUO core or Quad then was looking at the new E6850 3ghz 1333fsb on pre order.
As for the graphics would you also go a single watercooled 8800 gtx ultra instead of SLI saving £500 !!

Cheers mate

Fixed. ;)

I would go for a P35 Based board just not a DDR3 only one. Since DDR3 hasent really developed enough.

Well will you be overclocking?

As for the Graphics Card, personally i would just go for a GTX. The Ultra only gives you a few more FPS in games so not worth the price tag on it.

Also you mentioned water cooled 8800, does this mean your going to be water cooling your system?

wait for x38 mobo's.

8800 ultra is a waste of money.Get a GTX and clock it.

get a Q6600 and clock that too.

My QX6700 happily did 3.6ghz

When I get a Q6600 on 22nd July I will get at least 3.4ghz with it.

The top end stuff is just not worth the money.

I notice you mention 8800 Ultras in SLI but none of the P35 mobo's support SLI.And you don't even mention what Resolution you game at.

I suggest you do some more research on PC hardware as My feeling is that you think that if you spend thousands you will be on the right track.

This is so far from the mark its untrue.

OK chaps

I really am confused as to building this new rig now and hope you can assist further.
If you lot had say 3K to 3.5K to spend on a new rig today what would you advise and what chip , board and memory would you suggest to get a good stable overclock ?
By the way i got a new 27" dell widescreen on order and will possibly be gaming at 1680 x 1050 or 1900 x 1200

thanks again

Basically if you spend 3 grand on a PC today you won't get twice the PC than if you spent 1.5 grand.

The top end stuff is always disproportionately expensive compared to the midrange stuff, and when you buy a component you have to look at what you're actually getting for your money.

For instance, all the Core 2 Duos have essentially very similar architecture, whether you spend 60 on the e2160 or 200 on the e6700. They both have 2 cores, one chip has a 1MB cache and one has a 4MB cache, but both can do 3GHz+ and that's what most applications care about, not the cache (so much).

So it's about being intelligent (no offence) about the product choices you make.

There is little point in getting SLi, as (1) You never get double the performance, 1.5 times in an average, and a generous one at that; (2) You only need SLi of GTXs if you have a 30" screen run at native res, otherwise a single GTX will do.

Also, the Ultra is essentially the same product as a GTX, just clocked a little higher by the manufacturers. For the privilege of this, they will charge you an extra £150!

If you wanted a top system, you'd get a P35 mobo (or wait for X38 as easy suggests), a q6600 (wait for the 22/7 price cuts) and a single GTX, with a 24" dell and save yourself a grand.

If I had 3.5k to spend Id be buying mid range components for now cpu, gpu,mb etc but buying high end cases, watercooling, a couple of 24" monitors, vista ultimate etc. So really my reply would be to only spend the big bucks on the bits of kit that will last you through your next few PC's. Watercooling monitors and OS's can move on when you upgrade where as CPU,GPU etc will lose performance far more quickly when compared to new components.

Hope that made sense....

Mate,

There is no point in spending 3K on a pc.

You can get the same perfromance for much less.

Buying ones overclock springs to mind.Overclocking is about getting performance for free .

Top end components do not clock any further than the mid range stuff.

A good solid mobo and ram will yield great results.

Q6600
X38/P35 MOBO.
4 GIG DDR2
8800 GTX

Sorted. :D

Exactly :D

Also, no point jumping straight into watercooling (if you pardon the pun) either. Start with a good high end air cooler, and if you need more overclock, or more cooling, look at building a water cooled rig.
