Hey all,

This is my first post here, so "Hello all" :)

OK, I'm building a new rig as I've now had enough of my current one, and it's slowly starting to die. :(

Really I'd like to spend as little as possible, so this is what I'm planning on getting.

Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 - Already bought

Intel Pentium 4 945 Dual Core "LGA775 Presler" 3.4GHz (800FSB)

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4

Leadtek GeForce 7950 GT 256MB - To be accompanied by another one at a later date

Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 NCQ 320GB SATA-II - Will probably be accompanied by various other HDDs at some point

This comes to £601.48.

Now I'm kinda stuck with which power supply and case to get. Obviously I'm going to want something juicy enough to power the rig, but does it matter to much if I want to overclock (which I will)?

As for the case, really I'd like a full tower, not to fussed whether or not I can see its inards, just want maximun air flow.

So any ideas would be much appreciated. :)
Thanks all

- Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM
- Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU
- Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775)
- Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming case

What he said ^ It would be daylight robbery not to get a core2duo, great price/performance and overclock very well too :) Welcome to the forums

So even though the Pentium 945 is 3.4GHz and also duel core, the Core2Duo will give me a better performance?

And also about overclocking. Will this set up be OK for overclocking?

Thanks again all :)

Compare the chips here :)

C2D overclocks better than any CPU ever made (I think)! Just make sure you get a good case (sufficient airflow but quiet) & HSF (AC7 is good). Also RAM matters, go through the Memory sub-forum for more info. A reputable* PSU will ensure everything runs well even out of spec (i.e. overclocked)

Oh, & welcome to the forums ;)

*i.e. 450W is enough for a single card system & brands: Corsair/Seasonic, Tagan, FSP, Enermax & OCZ.

EDIT: How about...
  • GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) £141.99
  • Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £64.99

  • Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM £42.99
  • OcUK GeForce 7900 GS 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £91.99
  • Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775) £13.99
  • Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Aluminium Midi-Tower Case - Black £49.99
  • Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK) £59.99

Well I have already ordered the Asus board. (I've heard lots of good things about it).

I am now undecided on which RAM to go for. I've been reading through the forums and have found quite a few people have been having problems with it. I dont really want to spend anymore than £200 on RAM, how about these:

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-6400C4 TwinX
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4
OCZ 2GB PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC
OCZ 2GB PC2-6400 Dual Channel Titanium EPP-Ready Edition

i'd get the geil ram you first said.

Seagate make the best hard drives and the lian li pc-7 is the best value case imo

Should be some new "this week only" deals at the end of the day. If not many of your items are on special then it may be wise to wait

Thats good. But OP said he is going SLi on a later date, hence the 620W PSU. I'm not sure if the 520W is a good enough PSU for 2 card solution + overclocking.

To the OP, stick with the geil, but if insist on choosing another brand, go for corsair/cellshock.

Thanks all :)

Now onto cooling. I've heard the chipset gets pretty hot on this board, and also I wouldnt mind it being a lot quieter than my current rig.
So am wondering if it would be a good idea to get a water cooling setup? Should I make my own, or buy a complete kit? Maybe a case and water cooling like the Thermaltake Kandalf LCS?

I've heard Danger Den do good water cooling components. What do you think?

Personally, I'm not a fan of water cooling. It's (relatively) expensive, and can prove to be quite a hassle.

Both the Tuniq Tower and Scythe Ninja are excellent air coolers, and assuming you're not going to extremes with the OCing, they'd be fine.
