Hi, just built this system, installed all my usual crap, and decided to run 3dmark06 to see how much of a boost i got off my old system... suprisingly, ive lost about 700 points off my old score, my current score is now around 9800...
the new system is:

amd x2 5200+, Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3 mobo, 2gb geil ram, and a HD4870

Im totally stumped as to why im losing points...

My old system is like a AMD x2 4200+, 8800gts (g80) 312mb, and 2 gig of crap ram... urgh.

cheers

well i ran a crysis bench (sorry lol) and that was like a 34fps average... then ran cod4 i had to take off vsync on it because it was stuttering with it???? games a fresh install, after a format, training mission it was boucing around from 70 - 120 etc, but when i got to the boat mission, it was going down as far as 30? is that normal?

oh yea the PSU is a 650w

did you do a fresh rebuild of the OS (operating system) when you upgraded to your new rig??

and are you sure your drivers are all up to date, as despite the fact that 3dmark06 is as monkeynuts say, a rubbish measure of real system performance, you should still be getting an increase in scores

yea, i built it from the ground up, then formatted my hd when it was done, fresh install of xp, sp3. Someones just said 8.8 cats are released but im having trouble finding them. Im just making sure ive installed the chipset drivers properly for the mobo etc.

Perhaps it's worth looking into the BIOS making sure you've not accidentally underclocked the CPU, and check the graphics card temperature?

Ive over clocked the cpu to 3.0ghz, ran a stabilty test for 3 hours, temps never went over 56, and 32 at idle... ive got the 4870 at 790/1080

also, ive done the fan fix for it, the temps are 43 at idle and about 60ish on load.

cheers man

Well my 5600+ with an 8800GTX was about the same or slightly higher.
Your cpu is a little slower (and 3d mark is very cpu intensive) but the 4870 is supposed to destroy the GTX, so I'd expect higher.
My current Q6600+8800GTX weighs in just shy of 15K

hi, well i had a look at the compare link on 3dmark, and that seems about right for my system, which is a little dissapointing... but ive been recommend to invest in a phenom, which i may do, as im trying to future proof for *atleast a year* im looking at a 9750 as my motherboard doesnt support the 9850.

ah i havent got vista... the thing is, cod4 and stalker drop below 60fps regularly... it doesnt seem to be performing much better than my 8800gts (g80) 312mb did... the 4870 i mean

there is one review cant find it now that 4850/4870 get less fps performance on xp i suggest upgrading to vista 64 bit

does anyone know if id get a significant increase in games with a phenom 9650/9750 over my x2 5200+?
cheers

edit: or would an x2 6000+ be more beneficial?

You wont get much more from the phenom, as few games use more than one core. All you would get, would be any "bang per clock" increase.....but I THINK the phenom's guts are nearly the same as the X2's so I don't think there will be much of that either.

Given the clock speeds involved, I'd say the 6000 is the better oprtion.....3GHz vs 2.2-2.4 for phenoms.
Of course if you do a lot of (threadable) non-gaming work, you may find the phenom a better option.

Bugs me that any time someone reports anything other than "WOW, this card is L33T" the excuses fly in.......oh it doesn't actually work in 3dmark......oh it only works in Vista, and a million others. It basically put me RIGHT off buying one.

I can offer only a smidge of guidance here as I am not a prolific gamer and don't have (or want) 3dmark etc...

I recently upgraded from a 6400+BE to a Phenom 9950BE, these are totally different systems, I downgraded the 6400 to my server and my Phenom is running on an Asus M3A32-MVP, I overclock the Phenom to 3Ghz and I can't say that I notice any difference in gameplay, I am running a PowerColor HD4870, there could be a difference but I just can't see it, everything is butter smooth anyway!

Having said that though I am not a prolific gamer and really only play UT3 and TrackMania, be mindful of the top end requirements of the AMD CPUs, from the 125tdp of the 6400+BE and the 140tdp of the high end Phenoms...

good luck
J.

Thanks for the help, yea i only really play games on here and a bit of photoshop, Im at the point now where i cant run the ut3 demo constantly at my refresh rate of 60hz with everything on full... which a lot of people with a similar system to mine said the 4870 could handle easily, so im not sure if its the gfx or the cpu playing up, or if i just had my expectations too high. So you would recommend an x26000+ over the phenoms for gaming (present games, i assume newer games will eventually start using more than 2 at some point)?

im tempted to get a 6000+ x2 with better cooling for ocing... if it is better for gaming? id just like to know a few more peoples opinions on the matter.
cheers
