Hello people

I'm looking into getting myself a new rig to replace this almost 5 year old AMD Phenom II quad core im running at the moment and would like some input from you guys.

This is the parts I've planned to use:

Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon)
MSI Z97A Gaming 7 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance Pro Red 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (But going for a total of 32GB)
Samsung 500GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive
Western Digital Caviar Green 4TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache HDD (I might go for a 5TB drive instead)
Corsair Hydro H90 140mm High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler
EVGA Supernova G2 650W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply
Corsair SP120 Quiet Series High Pressure Low Noise - Dual Pack
Zalman Z11 Midi Tower Gaming Case - Black

I got a bluray-optical drive and an EVGA NVidia GTX760 graphic card at the moment that I'm intending to keep for the time being.

I was initially going for a Corsair PSU, but it seemed that most people on this forum was recommending EVGA PSU, will 650W be ok or should I go slightly higher?

Will watercooling be the best choice or could I get away with having a "normal" CPU cooler?

And how is the case? The reason why I chose the Zalman Z11 is because I like how it looks lol.

Happy for any kind of input

The new Aerocool Aero 800 cases look more interesting to me, for the same £. They allow for longer GPUs too (Zalman 11 allows 290mm max). Nicer window imo, PSU shroud, more modern interior design. But get the one you like most, it's personal choice as long as everything you'll want in it, fits.

The Zalman 11 doesn't seem to fit 240mm liquid AIO's without some modding, though. http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1669184/h100i-h110-zalman-z11-case.html

Not sure about 140mm AIO like the H90. But for the money you could consider a better CoolerMaster Nepton 240M in a different case that fits it.

The EVGA 650 G2 will be fine for any single GPU card out there. Go for 850-1000 if you intend on having something like dual 980Ti/FuryX in future.

Good to see people still going for Z97/4790k.

Can't believe the 6700k is £389 and I paid £240 for my 4790k.

Z170 isn't worth it just for DDR4 and PCI SSD onboard imo.

McGraw, I'm not sure if it is financially worth it to go for the 6700-series as I'm not a hardcore gamer or so. My main aim is to get a computer that will generally do quite well for the next 2-3 years.

Danny, that Aerocool Aeor 800 case looks pretty good too and seems a bit more spacious. What i understood from the Zalman is that it can be pretty tight of space if you want double graphic cards.
If i'm not a hardcore gamer, will i really notice water cooling system, or should i save the money and get a standard CPU-cooler?

About the PSU, i'm thinking about maybe going with a bit more power, just in case basically.

Have a look at the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M as well.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Phanteks Enthoo Pro M Midi Tower Case with Window - Black £59.99
Total : £69.59 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

For a cpu cooler have a look at the Alpenfohn Matterhorn. It is a very good cooler for the money.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Alpenfhn Matterhorn Black CPU Cooler £39.95
Total : £43.86 (includes shipping : £3.26 Ex.VAT).

If you are not a hardcore gamer then a 650W will be plenty as I imagine you won't be running dual graphics cards ?

Lee, thanks for the input about the cooler. I think i prefer the Aerocool
case though.

I'm not going to run dual graphic cards at the moment, but it have been tempting at times but i got to settle with the GTX 760 i got at the moment.

I completely agree with you...

If you're not going x99 for whatever reason then z97/haswell is miles better bang for buck.

DDR4 will be a lot quicker by the time you upgrade anyway.

Edit...saying all that, this is more true if you're only considering i7, an i5 Skylake isn't too bad price wise.

Do you really need hyperthreading?

To be honest, I'm not sure what exactly hyperthreading does, but i thought ill go with as good CPU as i can in a format that is "tested" and not one of this really new ones, but still should hold their time for a while.

Danny, you did tell me about the Aerocool Aero 800. It looks like it only supports 2x3.5 HDD, I would prefer to have a few more spaces available.

I kept looking at Aerocool and did find the Aerocool Battle Hawk Midi Tower Gaming Case - Black, which if i understand it right supports 4x3.5 HDD's, and 2x2.5 HDD's.

Any ideas or thoughts about it?

The Battle Hawk supports 3 x 3.5" plus 1 x 3.5" in the single 5.25" bay (adapter needed).

You have a Bluray optical drive to go into a 5.25".

The Aero 800 has 2 x 3.5" plus 2 x 5.25", so you end up with the same slots for HDDs as with the Battle Hawk, but the Aero 800 has more mounts for SSDs.

So I suggest looking at other options. Corsair Carbide 200R maybe.

Danny, i was looking around a bit, and I did find the Antec GX300 Combat Ready Midi Tower Gaming Case, that supports up to 6 HDD's, supports up to 400mm graphic cards and 170mm CPU coolers. Price is the same as the Aerocool Aero 800.
