Ok, new build from my old 4800X2 (lasted 3 1/2 years with no upgrades :o)

1. Don't need monitor/mouse
2. When I get round to watching blu-ray it will be on a normal TV with player so no need for blu-ray drive
3. Forte - I'm a headphone user
4. Case - My old case is a TJ04, so just got to have another silverstone!
5. HDDs - was going to go for 2 SSDs in Raid 0 but I'll hang off those for awhile and wait and see what happens with the Vertex II. Also, don't need a lot of space hence the 150gig (might get another for raid)
6. 4870X2 for 24" 1920 x 1200 res

Questions:
1. Fans/Cooling: Should I strip out the fans inside the case and replace with others and if so what would you recommend?
2. Get a different heatsink?

I would say it looks like the case fans are already enough for a good airflow, except surely the top one should really be exhaust? Considering it's positioned towards the back.

Also, personally I would put a second higher capacity HDD in there (500/640?), though if you think 150GB will be enough for you then fair enough.

Looks like it's gonna be a nice system otherwise :)

Looks very good mate. I would have thought you might need more space that 150GB but thats a personal thing.

If you are a solely headphone user I would stick with on board sound, although im far from an expert on the sound side of things

A couple of things I would change.

1. Get the OEM CPU, you're already getting an aftermarket cooler.

2. Get a modular PSU.

I always thought onboard sound was OK, then I got an asus xonar essence card coupled with a pair of goldring NS1000 headphones, the difference is amazing, listening to music you hear things you werent even aware of before. Obviously games are more dependant on the code theyve been written with and whilst it does sound clearer theres less difference on games. Depends why youre getting the soundcard really
Dont think they offer the D0 stepping on OEM yet icey, modular is an option, but I find my PSU which isnt modular, I use all my cables up anyway so on a high end rig Im not really sure modular is too important, just my opinion though

Ah good point on the D0, totally missed that.

I would still say get modular, you're spending a decent bit of cash, might as well make life easier.

I agree with you about the soundcard bit, I had onboard until I got my Fatal1ty Pro and the difference was quite noticeable especially with headphones. How much were your Goldring btw thrifty?

150 and theyre excellent, only small complaint is the supplied lead is a wee bit short considering you plug it into back of PC, by time its stretched up you cant move too far, its ok for sitting at my desk but Im looking into getting a longer cable so I can watch movies n stuff in bed, the cables detachable at both ends btw

well my headphones are high end and will benefit from the amp in the forte and any 5.1 ill put through the onboard sound

Good shout on the modular PSU, and thanks for the feedback everyone.

Why? According to what hifi the best pair only cost £310, and mine are second to them
what hifi
Edit: actually mine were second to the sennheisers in the noise cancelling section (also £300) not the Grado's
Re-Edit: the xonar essence is also reportedly THE best soundcard for dedicated headphone usage

Wouldn't
3 (or even 2) x Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache be faster than 1 Raptor in RAID0 and still cheaper (but get 500gig)

The RAM the OP has chosen for this build, can someone link me to it? I cannot for the life of me find it on the OcUK website!

So I can only assume it has been removed?
