I think ive made the right choice getting the opteron instead of the retail venice as it was only £20 more for an extra 800mhz and 1meg cache

Im also swapping my 2gb geil value for the Gskill HZ and giving him a 160gb hard drive i have spare :)

he doesnt play many but he used to really enjoy soldier of fortune 2. he watched me play COD2 for a bit and decided he wanted it.

Im not really diddling him because mine did cost me £160 anyway and a 160gb hard drive would cost more than £50 (i think) that the memory is over some ocuk value. plus geil value is quite good anyway. everyones a winner!

oh and im building it for him aswell!

Not strictly true, an Opty 146 is a damned good CPU even without clocking.. although quite where the OP think's he's getting +800Mhz from I'm not sure.... the Venice 3200 is 2ghz... and so is the 146.. the 146 is effectivly about 200mhz quicker and runs cooler so is a nice buy for the price but not massivly quicker.

Still won't be 800mhz quicker.. a Venice will go to 2.6 pretty much guaranteed.

*points at sig.. which is actually slightly inaccurate as it's running at 2.65 now*

Opterons have twice the cache of a Venice though.
I know - which is worth about 200mhz.. point I was trying to make was that there isn't 800mhz difference between the two.. the MAX you can argue is 400mhz and quite probably a rig that manages 800 out of a opty will get close to that out of a venice too.

 strange how cpuZ tells me its at 2.8ghz (as does every other program) so why is it 2.65?

Anyway I went for the Opteron and arctic cooler because its twice the cache, most places sell them for a lot more than I got it for. Plus the place no longer has them for sale, so they must be good if they are flying off the shelves!

Point I was making was that the 146 is the SAME base clock speed as a 3200+ Venice. Saying the 146 is 800mhz for £20 more is completely wrong. You argued that you where overclocking to which I pointed out that the Venice cores overclock well too. So best case is an EFFECTIVE 400Mhz difference and being honest it's probably nearer 200-300.

I backed this up by pointing out that my 3500+ Venice ( same core as the 3200+ remember ) is running at 2.65Ghz.. so a 146 if it did indeed hit 1.8 would be running just 150mhz more.. effectivly about 300-350more.

Reason I'm trying to point this out is someone who may not know much about CPU's may also buy a 146 and find themselves disapointed.

In summary a 146 is 2Ghz Stock (effectively a 3400+), capable of around 2.8-3Ghz typically.
A 3200+ Venice is 2Ghz Stock, capable of around 2.6-2.8Ghz typically.

My Opteron has hit 2.8ghz though not 1.8!! id be devistated if it only hit 1.8 :p

(the venice 3500 cost more than i could get a 146 for anyway)

anyway, he'll like the system im sure

hehe oops bad typo there - lol, was just trying to clarify what the situation was. The Venice 3200 clocks as well as a 3500 - just used my own 3500 to back up what I was saying.
