Hi,

Im getting a new rig this week, going with core duo extreme etc,, about gfx,.. is it worth me just buying a single GX2 or a 1950XTX for now, then selling it and swapping to G80 when it arrives? I really need the pc now so can't wait. Just wondering,,,,,

Thanks!

IMHO, the cards that will get hit hardest by the G80 coming out will be the X1950XTX and the 7950GX2.

If you got a slightly less bleeding edge card (7900 GTO, X1900XT) then the impact would be less. They should both be capable of doing good stuff at all but the highest resolutions, and you should have a noticable jump from that to the next gen DX10 cards. And as they have been discontinued, they won't drop much more in price (and when you come to upgrade, people may also need them to complete SLi/Crossfire setups).

If you plan to get a G80 then do what easyrider is doing. Buy an eVGA 7900GTO or 7950GX2 and use the 90 days step-up programme to upgrade for a fraction of the cost.

Sweet, do you know if it is 90 days from the card being dispatched?

cool...

90 day upgrade path? never heard of it.. I assume you just keep your reciept and if you wanna upgrade its lots cheaper? and you swap?

It's a part exchange.

You keep your reciept, and when you choose to, you send your card off to eVGA with the reciept and they send you whatever card you want. At which point they charge you the difference.

I.E. If you paid £150 for "Card A" 80 days ago, you send them "Card A" and request "Card B" that is £200. They send you "Card B" and charge you the £50 difference.

It should be noted though that you can only do this once per fresh purchase, you can't just chain step-ups so that you're spending nothing every time.

Do you guys rekon that G80 will be worth it, I mean will it really be much faster and will DX10 be worth having at all?

lol
:D

It is true, there is quite a bit of discussion on the subject - I'd say the only risks would be (a) the eventual price of NVidia's G80 card and (b) getting hold of one in your 90 day window!

lol..

I did have a quick look in the post relating to G80 but couldn't find anything other than arguments.... :)

I guess I should find my own answers on such a sensitive issue ^_^

I think on eVGA's website they say that if you trigger the step up program before 90days are up, and you go over that from waiting for stock from them, they'll still let you do it.

That is a pretty good deal - maybe they have 10,000 GTOs and GX2s still to shift! :D Even if they do, its nice to see a company trying something new in the realm of customer service.

Now, which evga card for my new rig.... ;)

Hopefully EVGA will add the 8,000 series cards to their list, as they will not be an option for the step-up if they don't :(
It's still early days yet anyway...............
