Just bit the bullet and ordered
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300, Socket 775, 1.80 GHz, 800MHz FSB, Allendale Core, 2MB Cache, Retail

Arrives friday which is a bit naff for a delivery time
will let you know how i get on friday will be interesting to see what overclock the boards capable of.
Just a stopgap solution until i can afford a decent pci express card mobo and ram of course.

EDIt : wow i've just made a huge blunder will have to cancel the order
the Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA VIA PT880 Ultra does not support
the e4300 on the default 1.00 bios only on the 1.40 bios does it support
that cpu well how am i going to update the bios to 1.40 with a non supported cpu wow that kind of information should'nt be hidden away so much
It should state it on sites that it does'nt support the core 2 duo 4300
i hope nobody else has ordered this combo.

personally i reckon you would be better off with an e6400, i have an e4300 and an e6600, most stable clock from e4300 i found was 3ghz whereas my e6600 hits 3.6ghz, e6400 have been seen hitting 3.6ghz -3.9ghz lately with decent cooling and is only a few quid more. but it seems like your lacking funds for a proper upgrade, i would wait until you have enough money to do a fuller upgrade, even if you did get the e4300 and this mobo to work by the time you go to upgrade your graphics etc, they would have shot down in prices, also why didnt you buy any ram? are you currently running ddr2?

edit: just notices does this motherboard support ddr with conroes? if so how would they overclock? say i have ddr500 which means an fsb of 250 x 9 = 2250, hardly worrth the upgrade unless you can run major dividers or lock the memory.

I agree i'm canceling the order give it a few months
and do a real upgrade.Blood rushed to my head a bit this morning
i guess will stick to my current rig.Yes they do overclock i think the 4 core version has a divider.
