New Rig Running Slow???

My new rig (see sig) should be much better than my old rig which was an AMD athlon XP 3000+ and 2x512mb 3200 RAM. I'm running the Q6600 at 3.2 ghzright now but I had these problems when running at 2.4ghz also.

So I'm very suprised to see the new system not running much faster in terms of opening windows and programs. Sometimes it will match the performance of my old rig but a lot of the time it will take about 1.5 seconds of egg timer before internet explorer opens and opening CPUZ just now took about 10 seconds as the system was churning although the CPU usage was less than 4%.

Is this RAM related? I'm only running XP which won't support my 4gb so I tried just leaving 1 stick in there but nothing changed.

I havn't changed any RAM settings because I know f-all about them. They seem to be running at the required 5-5-5-15 although the DRAM frequency is 470mhz and the spec on this website say they are 1000mhz - is this important?

new install of windows?

what you mean ram is 170? 170 mhz ???? default is 533mhz. You don't really want to be too far away from this either way

This is a fresh install of Windows. CPUZ says DRAM frequency is 470mhz (my mistake on the initial 170 typo).

Drivers for which devices? I have updated some of them but which ones do you mean in particular?

Run 3dmark06 just to see if something is wrong. I'll take a wild guess and say it should be about 12k-12.5k

3DMark is running fine - scores 14014

Graphics drivers have been updated but not the chipset ones. I tried to install the mobo updates a few days back and then started getting BSOD and couldn't boot the system so I try to say 'if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it'.

The chipset drivers shouldn't be casuing this though?!?!?
