Hi this is my fist post here.
I haven’t built a rig in a few years and I’ve fallen out of the loop. I want to build a quad core rig because a lot of software that I use uses multiple cores such as Adobe After Effects and lightwave 3D. I’m upgrading from P4 2.8GHZ so this is a big performance leap for me.

Could someone please let me know if the hardware I’m thinking of buying is all ok. Kepping in ming that hope to overclock the CPU
I would also appreciate any recommendations for a power supply.

SPEC:
Gigabyte GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GV-NX88T512H-B)

Zalman CNPS7500-CU CPU Cooler (Socket 478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA775)

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM

Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB ATA-100 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKB)

OcUK 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Kit (X2)

XClio 6030 PLUS Black Midi Tower Gaming Case - Black (No PSU)

Gigabyte GA-G33M-S2 Micro ATX (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Any advice you can give me would be great
Thanks guys

Welcome!

I take that you don't game then? Is the onboard graphics essential to you? chipsets with integrated graphics don' tend to overclock well (if at all) from my personal experiences, although I can't say for sure with that particular mobo. If you wish to obtain good oc I'd sugget the P35-DS3L which overclocks very well, plus a budget graphics card.

The all time favourite PSU around here is the Corsair HX520/620.

Instead of the zalman cooler I'd suggest the Tuniq Tower, Thermalright Ultra-120 (additional 120mm fan needed) or the Freezer 7 pro if you're on budget. I'd personally get a better case but it really is a matter of personal preference.

All depends how much you want to spend.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes I do want to game on this system, what changes you would recommend I make to the spec to make it better adapted to games as well.

I think I’ll go for the “Tuniq Tower” cooler.

I also think I’ll go for the motherboard you recommended. Is it good for games?

The P35-DS3L is the cheapest P35 board on OCUK but it overclocks very well it just doesn't come with the fancy features like firewire or SATA Raid. My friend has one in his PC and it's very good, it won't directly affect the games performance as such though.

duh didn't see the 8800GT in that spec list. That's a very good card and is very good at all latest games except crysis (no single card can play smoothly) at 1680x1050.

Thanks for all the advice. I have updated my spec based on your advice. Please let me know what you think. Im also thinking of getting a "OcUK Value L2442W 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor" to go with it.

also is PC2-8500C5 overdoing it or could i overclock just as well with slower ram. as i said before im out of the loop a bit. All i remember is that if you had a cpu with a FSB of 800mhz you needed ram that ran at 800mhz FSB as well.

SPEC:

Gigabyte GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GV-NX88T512H-B)

That 24" monitor has native resolution of 1920x1200 so the GT might struggle a bit if you want to play the latest games with all eye candies at that res. Stretch to a 8800GTX or GTS 512Mb if you can. Otherwise all looks good.

I think ill stick with GT for now and then mabye upgrade in the near future. My main priority is video work.

the G"igabyte GA-P35-DS3L" is out of stock would the "Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R" do the same job or am i better waiting untill it's back in stock

DS3R will be fine, just a bit dearer than the L, so depends on you're budget, if its tight wait til its back in stock.
