Hey all, been on the forums for about a year now but haven't signed up till now due to only having a hotmail account.

I’m looking for a university rig for game design and personal use.
It must last around 3 years.
Have 4gigs of RAM.
Cope with vista.

Here’s what I want so far:

Western Digital Raptor X 150GB WD1500AHFD 10,000RPM SATA 16MB Cache - OEM x2

BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

Dell E207WFP 20" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black x2

Pioneer DVR-112DBK 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter - (Black) OEM

Zalman CNPS9500-AM2 Aero Flower (Socket AM2/939/754) CPU Cooler

Logitech Z-10 Interactive Speaker System

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk (66I-00715)

Hiper HPU-4K580-MK Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Black UV

Which comes to £1,413.35.

My budget is £2200 and I’m going to buy a case for about £150 so I’m looking for a motherboard, 4gigs of ram and a processor for about £600.

Any changes, information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Tom.

Welcome to the forums properly now, with a budget like that, don't buy the Hiper, get a Corsair 520w or 620w, sure it costs more but it is probably the best on the market currently.

Can I ask why the 2x Raptor 150gb? If it is for Raid0 then I'd suggest using spare cash to get another hard drive for backup purposes. Also bear in mind that Seagate 7200.10s aren't much slower but offer twice the space for half the price.

I'd also probably consider Vista 64bit since you have a 64bit CPU and drivers should be out for all the hardware but check up to make sure.

This is what I'd go for in terms of CPU, Ram, motherboard and CPU cooler to replace the Zalman. :)

Cheers for the speedy reply!

I have two 250gig 7200’s so I don’t really need the space but wanted the raptors because there cool and a little speed goes a long way :) .

I’m too simple to go for 64bit :( . I’m not all that fussed really.
Thanks again.

Do love the hyper modular style. But power is power :D .

The Corsair 620w(well both of them in fact) is modular, they are based around the Seasonic S12 design but with beefed up M12 style connectors so you get the best of both designs and a 5 year warranty which is the longest in the industry for a PSU. :)

Fair enough on the Raptors, one thing to note though is that unless you have a clear case the window on the top is a bit pointless plus the Raptor X drives have half the MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) of the ordinary Raptor drives, it is 150,000 hours though which is still huge so the point is largely academic but it still exists anyway.

I don't know too much about the differences between 32bit and 64bit Vista so maybe a read of the Windows sub-forum is in order before deciding on which one to go for.

Cheers again!

Thinking about getting this :)

Very nice have the pc-7 at the moment but that looks so much higher quality. Anyone using one? Is it as ridiculous in size as it looks :p ? Any issues/problems? Does it come with a window as standard? If not can Overclockers get hold of one?

I've come to my senses and decided to opt out of the Raptors.

Thanks again,
Tom

I've gone for that case in my "soon to arrive" order....

You wouldn't believe the amount of swapping and changing I did while I tried to decide on the case.

In the end, Lian-Li got massive praise from every walk of life it seemed, I wanted something pretty big to make sure it housed an 8800 GFX card and I also wanted to easily fit a water cooling system in.

I didn't want a door which ruled out the "100" versions and I liked the black more than the silver.

Hence I went for this.... I'm sure it will be amazing build quality and super-big... my only fear is TOO big :D
