Hi guys,

Got about 1k to spend on a new rig to replace my aging a64 3200, 1gig, x1950.

Now i know there is always something else around the corner, but its generally a small upgrade like the 8800GT to the new 8800GTS etc, small increases.

However are there not new processors and major new gfx cards due in next month or so? if so am i totally stupid to consider ordering a new rig in the first week of jan or are these other upgrades a long way off and will i get much mileage out of a rig currently available?

Pc is pretty much just used for gaming, mostly fps games tho not fussed about crysis as i am more into competative games like quake and unreal. However with new ones being released every year i want this rig to last a good few years.

Whats the verdict?

If, like you say, you want the rig to last a good few years, I'd say wait for the Penryns and GeForce 9 series.

Aye that was pretty much my thought too, gonna be hard though knowing that i can upgrade and trying not to :(

Anyone have any realistic information on the release dates of the new chips n gfx cards?

1k you are probally safe now, to be honest new graphics cards on release date are going to be 400-500 as nvidia always release their top end cards first, the same with the top end cpu's so you are probally safe buying what is out now for 1k unless you feel like waiting 6 months for the new cards to drop in price but then again you will be faced with the same problem.

except the first new card to be released is the 9600.

Plus if you don't want the latest stuff why not wait till the news cpu's etc are out then whats currently top end stuff will drop a bit in price so you can save a few pennies?

I personally would build a decent rig right now... i.e. x38 mobo, q6600, p182 case, 600w seasonic, couple of 500gb hd and something like an 8800gt.

Then when the 9 series is released and the prices are realistic sell just the 8800gt and get the 9 series card as the build I spec'd above will not cost 1k anyway.

Makes perfect sense TBH ;)

Agreed, thats what I did. I might be wrong but I can't see the release of Penryn dropping prices across the board too much, so I bought a Q6600, but I'm continuing to use my 8800GTS XXX until the new nVidia cards are released.

Thanks guys i guess i will order a new rig this week then. I hear about a g0 version of the Q6600 is that just the one on ocuk or a diff kind of chip? i want to be able to get a decent clock out of it on air if possible, thinkin up to 3.6?

Also not read much good about the x38, everyone seems to recommend the ip35pro?

IP35 Pro is one of the best P35 motherboards you can buy, X38 is only really an upgrade if you're serious about Crossfire due to full-speed dual 16x slots.

The best Q6600 stepping is the G0 chip AKA SLACR AKA 95W edition, any of those keywords will help you recognise it ;)
