Hi all,

I needed a spec for a new rig i'm building. Heres what I've come up with:

Intel Core 2 DUO E4300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail £94.99
(£111.61) £94.99
(£111.61)

OcUK 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit £89.99
(£105.74) £89.99
(£105.74)

(Is it really worth the price to go for the 2.4GHz proc with 4mb cache instead?)

Anyhow my budget is 'around' £500, but this is flexible so I could spend upto £700~.

Gfx - always been an ATI man, but I'll switch if needsbe
HDD - at least 2 x 160gb in raid? (always used seagate, but again will consider others brands)

I don't require a case or a monitor, (I'll probably get a 22" dell ws tft (I've got a 19" hanns-g hw191d, but need something bit bigger)).

Lastly, this rig will be used for everyday work, heavy gaming, light graphic design/video editing.

Thanks in advance.

You didn't say whether you need a PSU, so I added one anyway.

Thanks for that, but I was thinking more start at £500, and then add/improve components as necessary.

The stuff you added looks good, but maybe cheaper gfx? and the PSU seems a bit overkill does it not?

Also, I'd prefer to have two seperate HDD to raid (0 or 1), does the P5B support raid?

thanks

masslac knows what makes a good build. That is a top spec for 700 notes, and will clock to speeds in excess of a £1000+ pc.

Put that in your basket, hit 'buy' and you'll be a very happy bunny :D

Thanks for the replies.

noticed the price of the memory as gone back up :(

Just had two questions:

Could I hit 2.5ghz stable on a setup like this?

and what would you recommend as an alternative motherboard (this one doesn't have firewire, and I need firewire for a few things)

Thanks again.

i have just gone with the e4300+2gb ram+x1950 pro setup, and i am over the moon with it :) runs everything loooverly, perhaps its because i went from an amd 2600 with 1gb ram and 6800gt

More likely because it's a genuinely very good rig. :)

OP - 2.5 will by no means be a challenge with an E6300, even with stock cooling.

Hi all,

Just thought I'd post an update as to what I finally ordered:

whoops! must have deleted by mistake. In the end went for this:

Corsair HX Series 520W Modular PSU - ATX12V v2.2 APFC

Did think about getting the Hiper-x (they come in their own box! a psu in its own box!), but then read about them going pop and taking out a few other components with them, so I settled for this instead.

Btw masslac, thanks for your help in selection much appreciated.
