I'm on Sky broadband (not fibre) and I was using the sky hub. I got a cheap router used (Asus DSL N55U)

I put in my sky username and password and it's working ok - I was prompted to choose mer or pppoe - I chose pppoe because I didn't know what mer was - do these make a difference and is their any other settings I should be changing

As long as your connection to Sky is stable, I wouldn't sweat too much - you could always boot your old router up and see what the settings were exactly.

The Sky Hub, however (I have one) is utterly dire and a completely waste of energy. I've picked up an old Wireless N bridge from work that was going spare, and I'll be using that for wireless. The damned Ethernet ports on the Sky Hub are only 10/100, though, which means they will likely be the Wireless-n's bottleneck (ironic, or what?).

Other thing you could do is speedtest.net on both routers. Suspect you'll be just fine as-is.
