Hey everyone :D

I am in need of a new router :) We have outgrown our Thomson Gateway TG585v7 because trying to stream with a 54mbps router is painful.

I think I need a 300Mbps router to stream well? I have a Wireless N USB adaptor so it should be fine. I have no idea which one to get but the budget is no more than £60. Any recommendations?

The 300Mbps is just a pretend figure though so don't go expecting 6 times the bandwidth of before. You might see an increase and maybe even a slightly better range but for streaming anything other than SD content you need to go wired/powerline really. If your AP and device are close though you might be able to stream lower bitrate HD.

Thanks :) I guess I shouldn't take advertising as real information :p I guess I could go powerline. Would be a lot simpler as well.

I want to stream HD movies from one PC to another on the same floor. I did try using a crossover cable but it will not work because both computers are using WiFi adapters so they don't see each other.

Is there anyway to connect both computer together with a crossover cable to allow them to transfer data while still being able to connect to the internet via Wifi?

Not entirely sure but you nay need to configure the LAN ports to be on a different ip range from the wifi. ie. 192.168.0.1 wifi 192.168.1.1 LAN and have both clients have a set IP and neither use DHCP. Just a guess as I've never done it.

You'd also probably need to leave the gateway and dns entries blank, and also play with the adapter priority metrics.

The easiest solution would be to buy a set of Powerline adapters and a switch. Connect both PCs to the switch, and the switch to the router (using the Powerline adapters). Lose the wireless adapters.
