I currently have a wireless linksys router but think it is failing and need to upgrade. I am using 20mb virgin media.

Needs to be...

Wireless N
Gigabit
Good wireless range
Reliable (Don't want dropouts)
Ability to block sites or words.

Will be used for..
2 x Ps3 (1 wired & 1 wireless)
4 wireless pc's (2 using N)
1 wired pc
Mobile phones at times

Don't want to have to upgrade to 3rd party firmware like tomato to get these features.

Not sure on budget but not over the top.:D

Thanks for the tip bilston. Is there anything wrong with the latest asus firmware at the moment?

The default firmware has a predilection to drop the WAN connection if you don't specify a QOS upload limit, otherwise it is just about acceptable.

You don't buy an RT-N56U for it's default firmware/plug and play ability any more than people bought the venerable Linksys WRT54GL for it's firmware.
The WRT only kicked into high gear with a custom package such as Tomato or the rather mixed bag of DD-WRT.

Likewise the Padavan firmware for the N-56U makes the router more stable and gives it the extra features that the community desire.

RT-N16 is cheaper than the RT-N56u, although the trade-off is it only runs on 2.4GHz but has double the ram. On the other hand it has been to go to tomato router for the past couple years.

The above poster is correct though, you'd be flashing either. In fact all of asus' broadcom based routers like the N16 use a large amount of tomatos base-code. Asus really have just changed the gui and added a few bits like newer drivers.

Would changing the firmware to something other than asus void the warranty? Also could i revert back to the default firmware if not happy. I have never changed firmware on a router before only updated.

Im not sure about the warranty, but if all else fails, just flash an asus firmware back on. They'll be none the wiser :)

Thanks for the info guys.

Anyone have any links to finding the best & right firmware for this router and also a back-up of the default firmware?

With preferably step by step guide on doing this as i have never done it before.

For the N56u you only have 1 choice.

For the N16 and any other broadcom based asus router you use the recovery utility http://tomatousb.org/tut:installing-on-asus-rt-n16 . RAF mod is the gold standard of stability, hence get updates very rarely. Shibby mod is the continuation of tomatousb i.e. regular update, has everything, decent introduction on youtube.

Can't find much on the n56us custom fw, probably because it's limited to a single router and required command line for things other fws have been using gui for, for years.
