hi peeps,

just got my new router (Netgear DG834GT) free from sky, and it happens to be an (albeit rebranded) version of my old one, same interface, same cosmetics etc...

the problem with the new one is that it works fine for a while then the connection dies, so i right click on the wifi doobrie in the taskbar and choose "repair"... this solves the problem, temporarily...

i have tried playing with the settings, such as setting the router to just work on "G" and also different channels but no change, the router is also running on the latest firmware (well actually, the netgear site states v1.02.04 is the latest and i actually have v1.02.28 so i'm assuming that its a sky variant of the software or something?)

anyhoo, there we have it does anyone have any ideas? i'm assuming its nothing to do with the actual internet connection since repair only resets the connection between the laptop and the router right?

i'm stumped

what sort of security is set? i.e. WEP or WPA?
have you tried just cabling it to see whether that the router works fine that way?

Repair does only repair the connection between your PC and the router.

If you're desperate, Google for how to flash the firmware back to the normal Netgear one, grab your password then use your old router again.

yeah it works fine on cable and i'm using WPA security...

i read up on the net and tried switching off uPnP - no fix... switched off automatic connection - no fix...

at a bit of a loss :(

you have tried removing the security? or perhaps making the security key shorter?
as when i put in the longest key i could i couldnt even connect to the access point, but when i limited it to 20 Characters on WPA-PSK it connected.

Have you tried to change the chanell that the wireless is using as it sounds like it maybe you have other wireless networks locally that are usnig the same chanel or a chanel that is very close.

Does your wireless card software show you other networks in the area if so does it show what chanel they are on ? If it does not show the chanel then I would suggest downloading and installing something like Netstumbler this will show the chanells of the other networks and then you can try and set your router to a chanel that is not being used.
