Currently I am using a Netgear DG834GT. Thinking of upgrading to a new device that supports "n" and has gigabit ports on it. I currently use Be as my ISP

Does anyone have Be and can recommend an appropriate router/modem. I am not interested in bridging or using multiple devices. I see a lot of threads about Billion 7800n, OCuK also have this ASUS router and there are a couple of Netgears I have seen that are all dual band, n routers that have gigabit.

Having not used an "n" device before I had a few questions about how they would work as well:

1) Does the router broadcast 2 different SSIDs, each with their own different authentication? One on 2.4ghz and the other 5ghz. Can the name/authentication be the same and you can specify which devices connect to each band via some sort of MAC address reservation?

2) Is it a case of the b/g devices use 2.4ghz and n uses 5ghz? Is there such a thing as an N network on 2.4ghz? Can all b/g/n work on the same frequency?

3) Do I have to check each N device I own to see if it works on 5ghz or do they all work?

4) At a later date could an ADSL modem/router be used with FTTC (BT Infinity). I think BT give you a modem and it then connects to a router (of your choice?). I would rather not buy another new device if I ever get FTTC.

As you can tell by my questions, I don't really know much about N etc!! I just want a newer router, with better range and some gigabit ports (I currently have a separate switch) and most of these seem to be dual band routers.

The main devices I will be connecting will be: MacbookPro 4.1, PSVita, iPad 3, GalaxyS2. I think these are all N but I don't know which frequencies they support (or whether that is even relevant).

Edit: Just done some reading and the Billion 7800n does not do 5ghz. Also the main advantage of 5ghz is just less interference but less range?

Billion 7800N is the best router in my opinion, can be used with ADSL2+ & Infiniy.

Expensive, but worth the money, see this thread.

Edit:No 5ghz is one minus point, but I find the 2.4ghz is just superb.

I read that thread after posting mine and the 2 links it has and that answers a lot of my questions.

I need to look into what I am losing by not having 5ghz. I don't buy routers that often so I am looking to future proof (Especially as the device will be around £100!!).

I suffer no inference at all using 2.4ghz, don't really miss the 5ghz band, & I bought the 7800N to be future proof.

Have a look at the other threads on this forum about the 7800N, just use the search at top of page, loads of answers to your questions.
