Hi Guys,

Currently having some issues with my network, I live in a house with 5 guys who use a lot of network wifi capacity and I tend to use most of the wired internet. I am looking to upgrade my person router in my room and potentially the BT home hub we have provided by the ISP.

Currently on 60mb down and about 12/15mb up on a good day.

We are just finding that the wifi is terribly slow.

My question really is, will upgrading the routers help much, and will replacing just my own router help.

If so any suggestions would be helpful, not looking to spend much, would just like some 5ghz wifi going, i currently have an old Netgear Rangemax.

Have all 5 of you got your own wi-fi routers in your rooms?

So you are all wired from the main router to your own rooms too?

Check and see if you are all using different wireless channels first you can get an app on your phone to help do that,if you are all using older wireless kit and all use ,say, channel 6 then you'll be having congestion problems so maybe just spreading your wireless usage out over a few different channels will be all you'll need.

No just me,

And no there are two rooms situated on the top floor, who both have laptops and consoles who connect via wifi.

2 rooms on the middle floor where the router is located which I have wired in for my own room and the other room, however they still use a lot of wifi.

ground floor room connected via wifi.

most of the devices in the house are up to date, the oldest piece of technology is a Galaxy S3 or an iPhone 5.

most devices seemed to be connected on the BT router on Channel 11.

I am thinking of getting a Linksys Cisco router the E4200 V2 as they are reasonably priced on second hand websites around £40/50

If you're going to buy a new router, you could easily keep the BT homehub where it is and then add the new one as an access point where it's needed, connected by gigabit ethernet. 1 router and 2 access points should give plenty of coverage and bandwidth for wifi.

can you enable guest wi-fi in the BT home hub?

If you can set that up and shift a few users on to it and see how it goes.

Hi guys, In the end I bought the Cisco router and the problem has dissipated.

Been monitoring it over the Christmas period and apart from the occasional blip nothing seems to be slowing down and everyone can connect and use the internet.

Thanks for the help!
