So, I have a ADSL line with Sky and have used there bog standard router for around 5 years now with hardly any issues.

A week or so ago I started to notice the router was acting weird and to be honest, I think it's had its day.

The reason I have slapped a £50 budget is in the past I have tried a couple of mid to top end dual band routers and never seen and improvement to speed or connectivity to warrant me keeping it, so ended up returning. I am not also looking to try and improve my speeds I just want something stable.

I mainly use my internet for Gaming (Xbox, PlayStation, PC), Streaming & Downloading.

Does anyone have any experience will entry price routers for ADSL and could suggest? Also would be good if I could get a dual band within this price range too....

Router would need to be both wireless and wired due to a variety of connections running through it (around 6 or 7).

The TP Link TD-W8980 is probably quite good, I can't find anything definitive on whether it supports Sky ADSL though.

Thanks, yeah I called Sky originally and the new router is chargeable, so thought would have a look to see if any third party would be better.

Speak to the web chat people, express a desire to move providers, when asked why explain you have issues with the existing router being a POS. You'll get a reduction in the monthly bill and a new router with very little fuss.

I have still got a Netgear DG834GT which loved the ADSL circuits with the broadcom chipset

Those things use to love maxing out the line and be stable

Define weird?

It's worth pointing out that you need to extract the details from your existing router before you do anything - Sky won't give them to you as connecting any router other than the one they supply is technically a violation of the TOS so they don't see that you'd ever need them. It's easily done though and i've not known the TOS to be enforced, just be prepared to plug the old one back in if you need to for support.

After I posted this I installed an TP Link 8968 yesterday (not on Sky, but still ADSL2+). I've used a few TP Link products now, not had a failure yet so can't comment on support/after sales etc. but they've all worked reasonably well. This is the first time i've used a TP Link router though and it's been fantastic. Guest wifi, VLAN support, QoS on a £30 router? I was lucky in that it didn't cost me anything (place near me re-works IT stuff), but for the £30 RRP i'm shocked at the features on offer. I'd never have even given a TP Link router a second thought if it wasn't for loosing patients with the Plusnet supplied junk, as it turns out i've held off buying a Vigor 120 adsl modem and AC56/66U or similar and so far it has performed perfectly. The 8980 has faster wifi and is only £10 more, if you have AC capable devices then consider the Archer D5, it's slightly above your budget at £65, but supports AC speeds.
