My sister needs a new router am looking though and can see there is a lot of choice out there now she is in hull & on The KC network (Karoo) i think this is adsl2

So am looking for a modem router the best we can get for about the £100 mark

she has had 2 cheap netgear routers in the past & they have both failed the last one only a few months old which has failed so she wants something that is going to be reliable over wifi there is quite a few devices running of which i will try to list

bedroom one
laptop
xbox one
tablet
phone android

bedroom two
desktop
wii u
tablet
phone

bedroom 3 (Guest Room)
none but will have guest laptop when i stay over

bedroom 4
laptop
tablet
phone

living room
laptop
desktop
tablet

as you can see we have a quite a few devices that hook up to the network

does need at least gigabit ports the house has cat 5 cables running to all the bedrooms and living room this is a 4 bedroom house & can always put a switch box in later

needs strong wifi as well for phones various tablets laptop ect

she wants to stay away from netgear if possible

any suggestions would be much appreciated

I'd double check first whether she has ADSL, VDSL or FTTH.

Only because KC offer fibre packages via VDSL or fibre to the home now.

What's the current setup / modem / router in situ?

Eww, so yes it's an old ADSL modem router. Does she not have fibre available? Might be worth checking on KC's availability page.

Back to your original question, she could go for something like TP-LINK Archer VR200 for ~£86. I've personally got the VR900 which is a model up, more money though ~£138 but it's fantastic! :p

i said about fibre she said its not avilable in her area right now :( and she is only 10mins from town on foot very close to the exchange my brother who lives further away can get it just put her post code in & she is correct it is not avilable :(

thanks for the info on 2 routers will have a look and have a chat with her thanks :)

The good thing about either of those routers as well, is they have both an ADSL and VDSL modem built in.

So if she can upgrade to fibre at a later date, she can still use it. Meaning she'll not need to upgrade again or use a standalone modem with it.

that sounds ideal going to save money in the long run then as she wants it to last a few years now instead of just months :)

whats the difference between the 2 can`t seem to find them on ocuk.

Unfortunately OcUK doesn't stock these models I believe. It'd be nice if they expanded the networking range a little! You may have to look somewhere like a certain rainforest.

In short the VR900 has stronger wifi if I recall and a more powerful processor, so can handle more concurrent connections without getting bogged down.

Just come across these 2 posts regarding the hardware in them:

Nice one, I'm sure she will be happy with it. Personally if you're using a lot of devices with heavy amounts of traffic, it's worth investing in a router that can handle it without coming to a hault.

I'd download the latest firmware from the TP LINK website first. When it comes flash that on first, then run the setup again after.

Mine was 1 or 2 versions out when I got mine. I had to get the latest one anyway before it worked as it was the version that allowed Sky Fibre to work for MER.

Thanks for the advice i`ll get the firmware sorted i agree about the amount of devices when my sister saw the thread she was surprised how many devices she had in the house and sometimes a lot of them can be all on at once.....

Update the router has turned up my brother has set it up for my sister and she is well pleased with it & i will have a play when i am next over ;)

Happy days. :) Mine is still going strong, love it! It's a breath of fresh air to have a router that 'just works'....

It hasn't needed to be rebooted every few days, the Wifi hasn't hung or ever dropped out (yet), the sync has never dropped still but that's because my line is brand new thick copper... Etc you get the jist! :)

EDIT: Did your brother update the firmware to the latest firmware build 150909?

Not sure if he did I asked my sister she does not know but i`ll check on that next time i am home which will be around xmas as i am over peterbrough way.

Will see how it goes might even get one my self after the expensive season is out the way with.

As i have the standard sky fibre SR102 here and it does seem to struggle a bit at times.
