New router

Hello,

Over the past couple of weeks our wireless signal has drastically dropped and the overall performance of our router is terrible.

My Dad has decided it's time for a new router (happy days) but we're not too sure what brands are good these days, we're currently with Sky (surprise surprise) and looking to spend roughly give or take about £100.

I've been having a look at the Asus routers and Netgear and both seem good, but the Asus ones strike out more as I've noticed quite a few people recommend them.

Cheers :)

Can I ask a question about the type of connection you have running (if yes); is the router/connection ADSL or Cable? Since Sky has ADSL and also Cable/fibre optic based services now.

NETGEAR is approved the most for "Home Networking"; I have a NETGEAR WNR2000v2 and I have to say it is great. I have had it for almost 4 years and now issues since the day I bought it (just firmware releases that have repaired my issues due to software faults and not hardware faults). Although, if you're looking for top brands that are used by businesses and tested for really strong use I would personally choose Cisco (Linksys).

Asus is a fairly decent manufacture; although personally I would stick to NETGEAR or Linksys / Cisco.

£100 is way to expensive for a router; I'd stick to optimal choices and go for the £50 / £70 range of routers.

Just to summarise I would say either NETGEAR / Asus or Cisco / Linksys.

Don't go with TP-Link or anything other that hasn't got such strong reviews against the brand/manufacture.

Thanks for your reply, we're currently on ADSL with Sky.

If we could spend less than £100 that's a bonus as we didn't want to spend more than £100 if I'm honest.

I'll have a look around for a Netgear router as we had the old Sky Netgear router before they changed and started issuing the disgracefully bad sagem ones.

I'm in a similar position with a sky normal ADSL router. Not sure of type but about 3 years old upright with no visible antennae. We've just moved house and due to new master socket location can't get a signal all over the house! So looking to replace it with a new/better one specifically considering signal range.

Assume with external antenna is best, but after some advice please. Were in the country with only about 4.5meg max speed if that makes any difference to choice?

Thanks

Just wanted to ask
You know that you have to extract the username and password from your sky router to be able to use a non sky router right?
Nobody has asked you this yet :)
