Been considering getting a third-party router for years now and I'm finally at the point where I want one. Currently using a BT Homehub 3 (Sawxs) and I'm after a router that has better firmware, signal etc. Been considering the Archer D2 AC750 which i figured would be a significant upgrade from the Hub3? Did look into potentially getting a VDSL ready router but Fibre is in the cabinet, however I "Gov/Local Council are looking into the best way of rolling it out" so i figured I'd pass on it meanwhile.

Buy a VDSL capable device unless in the future you want to spend more money. If at any time you upgrade to FTTC in the future then an ADSL modem/router will only be able to perform router duties.
I recommend a Netgear D6400 or a TPLink Archer VR900 the small extra cost IMO is worth it and the potential future proof for a few years.
