New rules to identify web trolls

I do have a problem with bully's, which is different in my opinion.

So true I have no idea when this media obsession with the word troll kicked in but they could at least have tried to understand it's online meaning, trolls are part and parcel of the internet and it would often be a more boring place without them. These people ruining this womens reputation using fake facebook account etc are not trolls they are something entirely different and I agree that something should be done to stop them I'm just not sure these measures will help!

I've seen nice people bullied off YouTube by trolls hiding behind their anonymity, some sites should make you prove who you are, it would kill such stupidity stone dead.

Clearly this Government idea won't work, silly Government.

Hmm I hope this wont apply to online games, as I can be a right ass on them and uses disgusting foul language and abuse over comms which could get me into trouble, I will have to sort my rage out.

The government getting involved with the running of the internet reminds me of when you see a middle aged teacher trying to talk "street" with the kids in his class.

Please stop, just stop. Please.

Nicola Brookes said the abuse started after she posted a message about an X Factor star

She probably just had people disagree with her and got upset I suspect. I created a X-Factor based video a couple of years ago slating one of the contestants that got over 2 million hits and even today when I log into Youtube I get messages ****ging me off for it, calling me all names under the sun in the scary all caps too but I just laugh at it.

The government needs to stay away from the internet. It is people like that one woman who was insulted on fakebook and she went to the police with 100s of pages of documents trying to get the police to arrest people for insulting her. These people are responsible for the loss of freedom on the internet if it ever. People like that should just stick to watching tv. Now we have police sitting on computers all day monitoring ******* and fakebook for insulting and discriminatory posts looking to arrest people for victimless thought crimes. Welcome to the orwellian nightmare.

Radio 1 Newsbeat were mentioning that these new rules will make it cheaper and easier for victims to identify their abuser and went on to mention one lady who got called a Paedophile and a Drug Dealer on Facebook and got tarnished by the mob.

What I don't understand is, why are the government and Facebook making an effort to make it "cheaper and easier" for victims to find these scumbags, instead of actually doing something about and removing/banning and then arresting the abusers at the first point instead of letting the victim do the hard work.

 Unless i'm missing something

People are silly, they put their whole life on display on fakebook. Then when someone insults them they get offended and want the government and police to protect them. Why not just not put your whole life on display on the internet if you are super sensitive?

Fakebook should have a disclaimer: if you are overly sensitive and depend on the police and the government to protect your from petty insults then you should rather go watch a game show on the tv and leave the internet alone.

TBH so far as the term troll has gone basically the media picked up a word they don't fully understand and decided it would be a good buzzword for internet bully.

SFAIC there is a difference most trolls post funny or randomn statements for the impact they have bullys insult and hurt others to make themseleves feel better about thier own life and problems.

The powers that be want to crush the freedom of the internet. They sell it to the masses with something seemingly acceptable as revealing the identity of people who harass the parents of dead children but in reality they want to reveal the identity of anyone who speaks on other certain political issues.

I swear the Government is just trying to ruin the Internet. Between them and the Media Companies we might as well just make it like Cable TV.

One side is clueless (Government) the other is greedy (media) and us Internet users are just plain screwed.

Post content/sig combo, HO!

Here's a BBC report on 'trollers' (which they pronounced trohl-ers) concerning the 'I can count to potato' meme....

What then happened? 1000s of more memes appeared featuring her latest picture and her mum's. Did no one tell this poor girl's mum how the internet works?
