I got me one of those new gpus but the monitor won't display anything when it's all connected up.

First off my specs

Windows 10 64bit
i5 3570k
RX480 8gb
8Gb RAM
256Gb SSD

and my monitor is a samsung 1080p 60Hz that has 1 DVI port

The cable from my monitor to my gpu is DVI to VGA, with the VGA end having a DVI adaptor on it so it can connect to my GPU. That setup works with my old 7870 just fine.

Now the RX480 only has Displayports and HDMI. Soo I used a Displayport to VGA adaptor to connect it to my monitor, but nothing shows up on screen when I boot. It shows black screen and nothing else. Any ideas?

I'd return it now before you damage any components and get a 390/x or 970/1070.-

And why DVI > VGA > DVI?

Pretty sure you need DVI > HDMI.

I would have used a DVI to DVI cable with my old 7870 but the cable that came with my monitor was DVI to VGA so I had no choice but to use an adaptor.

I'll see if I can get another cable, a DVI to HDMI should fit with no adaptor needed.

I really hope it's not a bad card, so I'm trying any sort of troubleshooting I can before thinking about sending it back.

EDIT: What HDMI to DVI cable should I get? sorry I don't know anything about cables.

Any HDMI/DVI cable will do since your monitor is just 1080p 60Hz, no need for anything fancy. And the reason you couldn't get a picture through the VGA/DP adapter is because all Radeons after the 290 do not support VGA output and the adapter requires VGA signals to be prrsent on the DP socket.

I've ordered a HDMI/DVI cable. I Reeeeaaaly hope it works.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate the explanation.

it's more likely to be the cable than the card.

do you have a TV with HDMI that you can try plugging the system in to with an HDMI cable? just to confirm the card isn't dead?

cable adaptors can be a bit iffy in my experience.

Same with my new Sapphire RX480, It's not outputting anything on the DVI, both the HDMI ports work but the HDMI on the monitor isn't as crisp as it is to the TV. Getting some weird issues on window titles.
