Hi guys,

I start my computer, load windows (8.1) and my R290 is working fine. I run Heaven 4.0 get a score of about 1300 which I've been told is about right for a R290 at stock clocks. I even play some games like far cry 3, have everything fired up on ultra and the card just runs it fine.

I always leave my computer on most of the time and when I get back to start up a game i'm getting really bad fps like max 10 to 12 fps. I run Heaven and i get the same fps of around 10 and get a really low score of about 250. I dont even have to leave my computer running for this to happen. I'll be on the internet for a while and then I fire up a game and my fps has just dropped down to like 10 fps.

This has been happening more and more frequently now. Its like the card is running without drivers. I open device manager and check the drivers and it shows everything working properly and I have the latest AMD drivers (13.12) installed and running.

If I restart my PC everything starts working and my fps goes up back to normal. I leave my PC idle for a bit and I start getting this problem.

Why is this happening ? Is it the card or is it the drivers ?

What's your cpu doing when this happens?

Just for me, one favour. Go into the services and disable the AMD Fuel Service. Reboot and test. Just a hunch I'm working on. I'll let you in on it if it works.

my cpu is doing nothing, the computer is just left turned on but not running anything.

I looked for AMD fuel services but its not on the Services list

Is it going into sleep mode? I use sleep myself on 8.1 and have not noticed any performance problems.

nah I have sleep mode and hibernation all turned off in windows.

I dont even have to stop using my computer for this to happen. I'll be on the internet for a while and then I fire up a game and my fps has just dropped down to like 10 fps.

Well im stumped. Might be worth troubleshooting various parts of your pc. Can't see a reason why performance would suddenly drop off like that unless you have a faulty component somewhere.

I thought that myself and did Memtest on my RAM which turned out to be faulty - got 296,000 errors. So i replaced the RAM but I'm still getting this problem :(
