Ok guys. Looking to buy a new sat nav unit. I've been checking the reviews of the Garmin Nuvi 300 - all have praised it beyond belief. I'm leaning towards this, although I'm unsure on it's 'dasboard disk' - what exactly is this?

Not looking to spend more than £350, but also, I'd prefer not to use the windscreen suction thingy mount. Would prefer an alternative mounting method, but not too sure on this? Any recommendations would be be great... :)

Could you mount if off an aire vent grill?

Most mount on the windscreen as they need to be able to see the sky for GPS reasons. I use Tom Tom on a PDA and the maps are quite good. I'd recomend TT but saying that I've only tried TT, but there's nothing wrong with it. They are all much of a muchness.

Garmin make GPS kit for military aviation so I'd buy that purely on their reputation in this area

You should be able to get a decent signal inside the car without line of sight - that wouldn't be the reason for mounting it on a windscreen

Sony make £3000 HDTV cameras, but that don't mean the £200 cheap ones are going to be the best does it, think about it ;)

If the budget is limited a Garmin I3 is ideal but if money and time is less of an object then I would wait a few weeks and look at the Tom Tom X10 series with updated receiver etc.

Aye, the Garmin i3 is a good unit (well its never let me down) but the fact is you get what you pay for. Considering they can be had for £129.99, they aren't bad but you would be better getting something with a touch screen if you can.

Take a trip down to Halfrauds or check www.pocketgpsworld.co.uk for some reviews.

My brother has a TomTom Go 300 which he secures in front of his dials using Blu-Tac.

I use my Qtek 9000 PDA which is also located in front of my dials using a piece of non-slip matting. Googling for 'dashboard non slip mat' will find loads, but Machine Mart will sell you 4m x 0.4m roll (item HD1560) for £20.

I have the original TomTom and it is really good. The interface and 3D view are excellent. I prefer the map views it gives you to that of its competitors.

Where do you guys mount your tomtom?

Depends on how i'm feeling.....

*ahem*

I used to have it in the middle of the windscreen, but now i have mine to the right of me. Easier to glance at i suppose.

Is it easy to put the mount on and take it off after use? Also, can you use the windscreen mount on a 2nd car?

Sorry for all the questions, just need to get clued up on all this!

That is where I have mine, just to the left of the windscreen pillar. It doesn't distract me there.

fancy getting a new satnav myself but we have so many cars broken into at one of our offices recently , all have either has that satnav mount still on the indow or a mark from the mount . they need to do something to make these more secure , maybe a remvable card of some sort . leave the satnav in but make it obviously unuseable

I use the suction mount on my i3, and it transfers to another car no problems. I just use screen wipes to make sure the screen is clean before application.

Edit: I mount mine to the left of my steering wheel low down on the windscreen so it doesn't obscure my vision or get hit from air coming from any of the vents.
