Been reading this quite frequently recently. I think it's a good read but it's quite expensive! The aim of this thread is three fold:

1) Do any of you here read this?
2) If not, and you read an alternative, what is it?
3) Are there any subscription discounts available? I've found a 40% off but have seen rumours of much better!

Cheers for your help.

For your time:

1) Yes
2) There are many alternatives, if there is a particular article you like, check the bibliography of that article to follow up the topic in one of the more focussed journals on the subject (e.g. the biochemistry journal)
3) Yes there are many discounts available, particularly if your a student. I get 40% off (the most I have seen so far) for working in a school and being part of the ASE (association for science education)

I'm not a student :(

I know how to find academic journals, and have a subscription, but I just like the general information that this brings. Kind of like a newspaper but focussed on science!

Read it daily online thanks to my university having a subscription with them.

I have to say, New Scientist is great for a more in-depth view of all types of science compared to your normal sources. However if you want more details you're better off going straight to the papers that are referenced in the articles!

My job doesn't give me the time to read journals except for topics that are relevant to my field of work. This is why I like NS!

More rewards, you crazy Christmas pervs!

1) Not too often these days - expensive and very Layman's science
2) Alternative (which is a proper peer reviewed journal and much more expensive) is Science or Nature (which are two top journals in the world, covering articles which have a large impact in the scientific community).
3) As stated before, students/teachers get the biggest discount.

In science I am a lay-person! (Not strictly true, but not sure that I want to know the nuts and bolts of studies). How technical is Science?

Far too technical for a layman.

I can't imagine reading Nature or Science for fun.

This is what I thought. I have done enough reading of Lancet and so forth to know that technical journals are no fun! I just want a read which is scientifically accurate, yet not overly complicated. I guess NS is my best option. :)
