Welcome aboard.

First of all forget MSI in X570 boards.
They went from B450 hero to plain zero in X570 by copypasting same £100 level VRM to half the X570 lineup.
Gigabyte did best overall design job in X570 boards with actually good VRM for the money and sense making (unlike Asus) chipset coolers.

And for lower than next-gen consoles CPU B450 Tomahawk is more than enough.
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-b450-tomahawk-max-socket-am4-ddr4-atx-motherboard-mb-33t-ms.html
With good case cooling that would do decently well for 12 core.

Also for its expensive price for rounding error level performance difference 3600X doesn't even come with proper cooler.
3600 and £21 Arctic Freezer 34 is cheaper and lot better combination by actually having cooling to maintain boost clocks.

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/arctic-freezer-34-cpu-cooler-120mm-hs-077-ar.html
Also Arctic's bundled paste is more than good enough.

And 650W is plenty enough.

And if part of the PC you'll be looking at most of the time are crappy shoe string models one, £75 should be highest acceptable price for standard amount of memory.

Saved money would easily give proper primary monitor:

Or CPU which doesn't get surpassed by next-gen consoles...

Many thanks for the welcome and the feedback.

So:

Motherboard - would you recommend the Gigabyte X570 over the B450 Tomahawk?

CPU - So you think the 3600 is a better buy, but later on you imply it will be superceded by the next gen consoles - is that correct? If so would it be advisable to go for a better cpu than the 3600/3600x ??

Power supply - nice supply. thanks for the advice

RAM - I presume that RAM would work with the Gigabyte X570 or B450 Tomahawk?

Monitor - nice monitor you recommend but a bit pricey and I would prefer to have 2 monitors.

I am confused by your statement of "And if part of the PC you'll be looking at most of the time are crappy shoe string models one," could you clarify?

Thanks

You really have thrown me now. I like the case. Not sure about the cpu cooler - looks a beast. Re the motherboard - is B450 chipset still worthwhile or is the 570 the way to go?

X570 board makes sense only if you're going to soon upgrade to 12/16 core and usage is heavier.
Even PCIe v4 won't be making much of difference for couple years.

B450 Tomahawk is perfect for 3700X, which is the only real step from 3600.

3600eXpensive has nothing useful and with stock cooler will be certainly slower in full continuous load than 3600+Arctic Freezer 34, which would be very decent also for 3700X.

Thanks both. So I think a B450 is the choice. I must say I prefer the MSI Gaming Pro Carbon but am unsure if it will take a 3rd Gen Ryzen - i think the 3700 is a 3rd gen cpu? I am also intrigued by having 2 x M.2 slots.

And that VRM is still far cry from real X570 level:
https://nl.hardware.info/artikel/94...den-review-op-de-proef-met-een-3900x-vrm-test
Definitely no PBO for higher CPUs with that if wanting good for long term reliability VRM temps.

B450 MSIs have either compatible BIOS from box or you can update it without CPU.

For game loading times important thing is any SSD, not NVMe.
And B450/X470 chipsets lack IO bandwidth to have own M.2 slot without it sharing at least some lanes with other slots.
(primary M.2 is wired to CPU)

@EsaT 90c - techinally fine as can run at 150c max before Mosfets start to fail . though gigabyte might set throttle limit at 120c odd .

Gaming its fine, AVX loads then maybe not the best or 24/7 use under 100% . which then you'd be running trx40 boards :)

b550 will just be under it . Dont think any Vendor will outclass their x570 offering

I recommend the NZXT H510, I have the H510i and its the best case I've owned. Just smart where it needs to be. Cable management etc is a breeze!

Thanks for all the help. So this is the basket I have:
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,029.09 (includes shipping: £13.20)

Would all that work together? also is an extra £100 for the Ryzen 3700 worth it?

It depends on which OSs you use, but on the Windows side you want Windows 10 Professional. If you ask in the Virtualisation forum you'll get chapter and verse, but here's how to get started with Windows.

Another way of doing it would be to run VMWare as a hypervisor, run both simultaneopusly, then remote from one to the other.
