I bought a nice new server case....

*** Competitor Link Removed ***

It is perfect other than it has three large fans that are seated in modular cages directly behind the HDD bays that slot in and out, these are powered by one molex and they run at full tilt and it sounds like a hurricane, i only have 7 drives in there and they are spread out so i dont need this speed, i want to be able to turn all three down enough that its makes no more noise than a normal PC, the server runs UNraid so the drive are not constantly spun up. I bought this HUB.....

i thought it would let me control all three fans in the bios via the header the hub connects to, i also realised the fans are 3 pin and not 4 pin so possibly not PWM.

I dont want to keep throwing money away and want a cheap solution, any advice ?

Thanks

There are powered three pin versions of the same thing. You can get one that is just a cable with no board, or a board if you prefer it. I would give you a link to the bay but it's not allowed. You are looking for a 3pin powered fan splitter. You can get and eight way one for less than £4.

I guess you could just rip them out and replace with 4 pin fans that you can control.

Any particular reason you bought a 16-bay enclosure when you only have 7 drives? There's a reason it was designed with big fans and lots of airflow/noise because 16 drives stacked will generate a fair amount of heat. It would also be housed in a rack in a server room where noise isn't of a concern.

To be honest i've used 16+ SATA bay enclosures for over a decade (funnily they were wayyyy cheaper back 08ish when i got the first one, like 100 quid) and never used the fans they came with or modded them for 5v etc..never had heating issues because i always design something like a bit of wood with 2 120 or 140mm fans to fit from handle to handle to push air in, this has always produced dramatic temp drops and can be slipped off easily when a drive needs changing etc..the exhaust fans can be kept silent and i usually run the intakes at 7v or so, run of the mill notucas etc.. so very quiet. Can either mod the case for an external connector or just run an external voltagr supply. For a home server it works a treat.
