Currently I have an HP dc7600 desktop which has FreeBSD installed on it and it is my server. If you look up the hardware specs of the dc7600 you will notice that it is oooold
Its a Pentium 4 with 1GB RAM and two 80GB drives mirrored.
It runs everything great but to compile new software on it takes forever (several hours).
So I was thinking, can someone recommend some hardware for building a new server? When I say server, I mean a glorified desktop! I'd like to have a similar case that I can place horizontally (and is roughly the same size).
I was thinking of an i5 CPU, 16GB RAM with two 2TB drives mirrored. Not too sure of the budget yet but I am flexible. Lets start with around £500. I am open to ideas.
Any ideas for CPUs, motherboard, RAM, case and CPU?
Its not a busy server but I do use it a lot and would love it have it running on something more modern!
Thanks for any help!
