Hi, am looking to buy some components off of a friend of mine.

Asus p5n32-e sli+
Intel Core2Duo e6600 2.4ghz
Nvidia 8800gts
2gb 800mhz ddr2 ram (4x512mb)
Xfi Xtreme Gamer soundcard
Random case
Coolermaster realpower m520

What kind of price should I be offering him for this lot?

And also could you recommend the other components to complete the build?

Thanks Alan

well if you can get this new PC for £370, then quite a bit less than that should be offered. The machine in the link is new (ie warranty is valid and components are newer tech - thus generally faster, cooler and more power efficient) and also more powerful than the components you list.

I'll be happy to come up with a build spec for you, I just need to ask: What do you plan to do with the PC and what is your budget?

Well no budget as such, is kind of a spur of the moment thing since im getting tired of using the 'family' pc (p4 2.6ghz, 768mb ram, 40gb hd, nvidia 6800 - rubbish basically :P) and my mate has just upgraded most of his pc and is looking to ship off his old stuff. But i was thinking £300-350 for that setup including buying hard drive, monitor, OS, anything else that I need for a complete pc and perhaps some other peripherals.

Looking to be using it for gaming, music, watching movies etc. Play cod2, cod4 and when cod:modern warfare 2 is release am looking to play that with decent fps and at least medium settings.

One quick question, how much Video RAM does the 8800GTS have?

The 320MB and 640MB are older, slower GPUs based off the G80 chip. While the 512MB version is the newest, fastest one. It is based off the G92 chip and is not too much slower than the GTS 250.

Ah, good stuff. Pretty up-to date card.

If you can get that all for less than £350 (inc monitor etc.) then you will definitely have a bargain - difficult to beat with new stuff.

I suggest that you also upgrade the RAM to 4GB (some good stuff here) and think about getting a CPU cooler and overclocking the CPU (should be able to hit 3.5GHz with something like this). That should give you a PC that can tackle almost all modern games very well.

Ok thanks for the advice. Is that 1066mhz RAM going to be compatible with the mobo?
And is it worth thinking about going quad core processor, or will the e6600 be good enough for my needs?

thanks

That RAM will definitely work in that mobo - as my flatmate did that exact upgrade and it worked great. Just make sure you are using a good 64 bit operating system (Vista x64/Windows 7 x64) so you can address all your RAM.

The quad cores are nice, but only shine when using multithreaded games (rare) and applications. For what you are doing the e6600 is perfectly fine (Gaming and movie watching). If I were you, get a decent cooler (link above) and overclock it, it will last you must longer and give you much better overall performance for little extra money.

Could somebody recommend a hard-drive and DVD drive to complete the build that would be suitable for this system? Also need to replace the PSU as the fan has gone dodgey, so what would be suitable?

Thanks
