hey peeps :)

been about 3 years since i bought my last system so i'm WELL out of the game, but i need a new system for around £800 tops that will play the latest games to a decent spec, and also handle apps such as illustrator, photoshop, premiere etc all running at once with silky smooth efficiency (not sure if this is even possible for that kind of money)

so, should i just get an OcUK pre-built? maybe go with a well reputed manufacturers all-in-one?

in with the bargain i would like a nice display around 20" so that kindof stumps the spec a bit i guess... would either like advice on which prebuilt would do me proud or alternatively if someone would spec me such a system it would be greatly appreciated :) (back when i was into all this a forum member called twopac (or something like that) used to spec everyones systems... legend :))

right... decided to spec my own simply cuz you HAVE to get more for your money that way... surely...

so decided on a bundle - 2.4 core 2 duo with 2gb Geil mem but q1) which mobo?

graphics looking at going with the 8800 series, but q2) which one is best bang for buck, i like good value and performance with graphics cards...

gonna go with a 10k rpm hdd so i'm assuming the raptor is still the daddy? think i'll go 150gb one...

the rest i spose is just preference...

any help on the above questions appreciated :)

There no way your gonna get all that on a 800quid budget with a 20inch monitor

Dans spec is pretty much spot on. If you want to wait til R600s come out then you might find the same quality graphics card for a bit cheaper which would let you put something more towards the CPU and motherboard. DS3P and E6600 would give you all the processing power you'd want for those graphical apps. Maybe a 6320 or 6420 which have the 4mb L2 cache would be good as well. Another good motherboard is the P5N-E Sli that lets you run your memory unlinked so your wouldnt be pushing that OCUK memory too far.

i am into my graphical so i'll whack up the budget to £1k...

and sorry, forgot to mention thats without the vat ;) so sounds like we've got more to play with now :)

how does this look?

Samsung SM-226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Silver/Black - £229.99
Pioneer DVR-112DBK 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter - (Black) OEM - £17.99
Western Digital Raptor 150GB WD1500ADFD 10,000RPM SATA 16MB Cache - OEM - £121.99
BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC2 640MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - £239.99
Intel Core 2 DUO LGA775 E6600 2.40GHz Retail / Abit AB9 Pro / 2GB GeIL PC2-6400C4 DDR2 Dual Channel Kit - Bundle - £309.97

this is £919 (without vat) - so if i add in a case to this am i looking at a pretty sweet spec or have i made some schoolboy errors?

(p.s. got a logitch dinovo desktop so that'll do fine)

the bits i'm not sure about i've put in bold... could i have advice on those bits and also a suitable (cool lookin but practical) case please?

from what i've read tho, these new ati cards are gonna be top end jobbies aint they so since i'm looking at low 200s i guess i'll just stick to 8800 gts...

could i be adviced on mobo and case please? reasonably confident to go with the above spec (3 posts up) just not sure on the mobo included in the bundle...

Mobo - Asus P5B, P5N, or gigabyte DS3P/DS4
Case - P180 for quietness, Akasa Eclipse good all rounder, Lian Li cases good all rounders too. Antec Zen for unbeatable value.

Mother board get the ds3 great overclocker, stable and cheap :D Wouldnt get the abit tbh.
Case the lian li pc7 plus is fantastic looks the buissness quiet lots of room and cheap as well. Youll need a psu though somat like a corsair or enermax 500w minimum.
As for graphics card the cheapest 8800 gts would be fine no need for the 640mb version as the monitor res isnt high enough to use it better getting the 320mb version.

Not sure if you'll really get much benefit from the Raptor considering the price. The samsung 7200.10s are almost as fast and much cheaper. Get a 320GB one instead of the raptor and you've got extra cash to spend on your graphics card. You might even be able to squeeze in a GTX :)

sweet...

well going off all the advice, could i just post my final spec before i order and get and last minute recommendations?

• Intel Core 2 DUO LGA775 E6600 2.40GHz Retail / Gigabyte 965P DS3 / 2GB GeIL PC2-6400C4 DDR2 Dual Channel Kit - Bundle [£299.97]
• BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC2 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail [£189.99]
• Western Digital Raptor 150GB WD1500ADFD 10,000RPM SATA 16MB Cache - OEM [£121.99]
• Samsung SM-226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Silver/Black [£229.99]
• Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Aluminium Midi-Tower Case - Black [£49.99]
• Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK) [£59.99]

Total = [£951.92]

hows that all look? i think i got the right bundle the ram with 6400C4 is better than the C5 right? we all good to go?

(exciting aint it :D)

EDIT: oh, just saw Darg's post, i was under the impression a very fast hdd makes a big difference when we're talking about image editing and all that? is that not the case?

For the price of that one Raptor you could get 2x250GB Seagates and have them as either separate drives or RAID 0 them. Either way, better all round performance over a single Raptor IMHO.

Yeah spec looks spot on, just make sure you include a motherboard :p :D
the gigabyte ds3 is up there mate... in the bundle...

could anyone recommend a hs/fan for the processor? - looking at the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro looks pretty good but dont mind spending more if it means i can get more from the processor...

I would seriously consider getting a tft which does not use a tn film. I am currently using one for my work but when I print I adjust the image slightly due to the print not matching the display, my 172t (uses pva I think is more accurate even when adjusted in my view)
