New Sigma 17-70mm F2.8 - 4.5

Just seen it on DPReview, looks nice. Shame it's not F2.8 throught the zoom though.

I reckon these will be towards the budget end of the market. I reckon around £200, with a £300 absolute max.

The 24-70 f2.8 ex dg macro is only £300 at most, so it's going to be cheaper than that..

Yup - not an EX series so deffo a cheaper lens, although with the exception of the gold ring found on EX's its got the same finish

But they already do 24-70 F2.8, 28-70 F2.8 and 18-50 F2.8 lenses.

For Nikon users at least, I can't see all that much of an advantage over the 18-70 that has been so well received already. The only difference really is 1mm extra on the wide end, and 2.8 at the fastest point rather than 3.5 but that's probably not a huge difference. On the other hand, the Nikkor is AF-S (USM Equiv) whereas the Sigma is not HSM.

If it was 2.8 throught the zoom range, it would be 1. a lot heavier, and 2. a lot more expensive.
