New Sigma lens

Dammit I wanted a new 85 and 50. I don't care if they're exactly the same as the old ones as they're brilliant lenses, I just want the smexy new black finish :)

Raikiri: Why would you upgrade? From the looks of things it's just a refresh, maybe with a few new coatings but the optical design sounds like it's the same as before. The only upgrade would be the Sigma 35 1.4 or Nikon 35 1.4G and those wouldn't be worth it given you'd be paying for FF glass - though they're both sharper than the 30 1.4 on a crop anyway.

This isn't for full frame just so people are aware before they start readying the wallet :p It will work but you will see the barrel in the viewfinder and images!

I assume most people with FF cameras will know that, given the existence of Sigma's 35 1.4 and the fact this is an update to their 30 1.4 DC lens - DC being digital crop.

Always worth mentioning, sometimes people have momentary lapses of concentration :o

mrk; Whats the finish like with the new style? does the lens feel better built?

The polished/brushed look bit before the lens mount is metal, the focus ring is metal and the rest is plastic but it doesn't feel cheap or light at all like EF non L lenses or Sigma lenses of old. The 85mm 1.4 feels less robust than the 35, for example.

It feels more solid than the 17-40L I'd say and they share similarities in build (metal areas, size).

The new Sigma has way more metal below the plastic skin and the weight and rigidness is a tell of this as is Sigma's own admission of the use of extra metal inside!
