New single card or XFIRE?

I built a new PC not so long ago and still feeling like I want more performance, currently running a 3770k @ 4.4GHz and a WF3 7970.

I would always prefer a single card as it's more compatible and has no "micro stutter" issues, but I have no direct experience of xfire.

I have an Asus Z77 mobo so as far as I'm aware I would be able to run 2x 7970s in tandem with no issues. I will however have to get a new PSU so will have to factor that into the cost. And is heat going to be a problem with two cards? Currently my 7970 doesn't go over 60c or so.

So which would be the best option for me? Getting a new 7970 and crossfiring or selling the 7970 and getting a new single card that will give significantly better performance?

A 290/GTX780 would be around 25% faster, and the GTX780Ti is probably around 30-35% ish faster than the 7970.

To get the biggest performance boost for the money, I'd have to say getting another 7970 (also know as 280x now, and you'd probably won't be able to buy a new 7970 anymore).

In terms of crossfiring, I'm not sure if you'd would require flashing your Gigabyte WF7970 with the Gigabyte WF280X bios in order to crossfire or not.

There's a MSI 280x Gaming on today only deal for just £199.99 today:

I have 7970 xfire oc in my wifes machine and 780ti sli in mine, a single oc 780ti is the same speed as her two 7970's so that is an option for you without changing the PSU.

I think if your going to go down that rout a single 290X is just as fast and £100+ cheaper than a 780TI.

Its a good idea if he can get <£200 for the 7970 upgrading to a 290X will costing him the same as getting another 7970.

290x sounds like a cracking idea, and will end up costing me about the same as new PSU and another 7970.

I think that's probably what I'll go for. Just need to put my 7970 on the MM I guess.
