Hi there,

Made the leap over to Sky and just got the internet turned on. I know it is the settling in period but can you guys advise on potential speed as its been a while since i did this.

Sitting at 4mb down and .6mb up

My line Att is 46db and 29.2db
My Noise is 6.2db and 16.5db

Poll interval is set to 10 (What does that do?)

Any advice appreciated

I was on 8mb download and 1.3upload on O2. (8mb was the max package at the time so i think it could reach 12-13mb)

i have better line attenuation and mine has settled at around 10MB

i think you should settle around 8MB tbh

Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10145 kbps 1117 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.5 dB 22.4 dB
Noise Margin 8.5 dB 10.10 dB

Thanks. Which part is the bit they reduce to speed up, noise margin?

Isn't yours high? 8.5?

line attenuation shows roughly the distance from the exchange so i am closer, but my line has more noise on downstream but less on upstream.

therefore i would guess you get around 8-10 MB download but your upstream is going to be a lot less than mine possibly 0.5MB upstream.

what they do is test speeds in increments on a daily basis until your line disconnects or has too many errors.

mine slowly went up daily and it's now settles on the above, yesterday it was on 11MB for instance but today it went down to 10MB, i will check again tomorrow hopefully i can get more speed but i doubt it. it was installed last friday so i still have 3 more days of testing i believe.

Hopefully I get a better upload than that. I was on 1.3-1.5 with o2.

is this using the same phone line as o2? or the master bt socket? also depends on the router as well tbh.

you could spend £100 on a better router which has snr tweaking, imo it aint worth it because at best your going to get very little difference for a huge outlay.

plus in 12 months i'll be moving back to VM and by then they will have 200MB

On the same line. But now using the sky router.

I will be doing much the same after 12 months. They are putting fibre in now, should be ready in October, so as soon as this is up will be switching to that.

Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10145 kbps 1117 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.5 dB 22.4 dB
Noise Margin 8.5 dB 10.10 dB

mine is now

Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10236 kbps 1117 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.5 dB 22.4 dB
Noise Margin 3.1 dB 10.10 dB

noise margin is down but speed is practically the same

Up to:

Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8646 kbps 1116 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.0 dB 29.2 dB
Noise Margin 6.8 dB 7.7 dB

So back to where i was with O2 but i was restricted to 8mb with them. Anything above this is a bonus now

mine is still

Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10236 kbps 1117 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.5 dB 22.4 dB
Noise Margin 3.6 dB 10.10 dB

so i think it has now settled, been like that for a few days now

i think they constantly monitor connections on their new systems, so im hoping that with such a low noise margin on the DL i could get a bit more, but tbh how much difference is 1 or 2MB going to make?

i have heard some horror stories about sky but 10MB for me is fine. will see how it is over time now, with ping, etc.
