hey guys,

i had a thred about a new sound card a few days ago and i think ive desided to get the xfi but i was thinking about speakers too. i already have one of these:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/HDA_Sound_Cards.html
The top one
- because i was using some cheap dolby 5.1 console system that used optical but these speakers were ver sub-standard as i discoverd over time.

so given that i have 5.1/7.1 support on my card and i have a pair of logitech x230 2.1's - what would i get the better result out of:

some 5.1 speakers
some 7.1 speakers
an xfi card

i plan on getting both but id would be a while till i could get the other one so

sound card or speakers first

thanx

PS makes and models of speakers - nothing over £100 (that will actuly be the budget i dont have any other money after that)

Personally i'd buy nothing at the moment. The card you have looks pretty decent, I don't see much benefit with upgrading to the X-Fi. I would instead save up for longer and just buy the Creative I-Trigue 5.1 5600 or Logitech Z-5500 set.

Most sub £100 surround sets are pretty poor. I can pretty well guarantee (I don't know much about the card you have here) you'll get a much better quality result buying a Creative I-Trigue 5.1 5600/Z5500 set and sticking with your current card than buying an X-Fi and sub £100 set as any benefit the X-Fi may bring will be let down by the poor speakers.

Of course, you may want the X-Fi for some of it's extra features? If this is the case, i'd still save up for a decent 5.1 set before trying to buy one as you'll be enjoying the better sound system for longer. And it is likely this way that by the time you have saved up for the card, it will cost less than it does now anyhow :)

i see your point and just thought id mention that my card says it can support EAX up to 2.0 ( i think) but the only games it works on with out skiping and crakaling is red faction 1....that runs a a p2 easy so u see my point.

i could use it with speakers but not with all the "ear candy"

- do you see my problem a bit better now lol

than for the advice ;) but i need a bit more :D

thanx

I see your soundcard problem now. But it's only with EAX? I'd probably rather a good set of speakers and EAX off than it on with poor speakers but anyhow, best to have both :D

If you need to replace it then yeah the X-Fi is going to be a good choice. I'd still reccomend spending enough to get the Creative I-Trigue 5.1 5600 set when you change the speakers. Another suggestion is the Logitech® X-530 set which are RRP £60 so fit the budget, however OcUK don't seem to sell them :(
