That's what I have so far. I was given a total of £750 to work with. I'm not sure if I'm going overboard in some areas though... I know I want a Q6600 for him and I know I want 4gb of RAM and I know he wants a good GFX card. Now I am Under budget a little and I'm wondering if the 8800GTS 512mb would be a better buy than the HD3870 512mb. especially as that is in stock... but I did pick out a CrossFire mobo and although not planning a CrossFire setup now it could be an option later on...

Also wondering if I'm going a little overboard with the motherboard. He's 14 and really only wants it for gaming. but I would like to see a life of around 3-5years out of this build, with perhaps the odd gfx card upgrade. anyway £140 seams a little pricey for a mobo so am I (or rather is he) going to really see a benafit out of the x38 chipset performance wize and maybe from an upgradability viewpoint to justify it over one of the cheeper chipsets (p35/p31 ect)?

Oh, he will also be using windows xp pro 32bit btw. I am aware of the 3.5gb "ish" limmit but he may want vista on it at some point so I think the 4gb kit is worth the money.

Another question would be the demensions of the NZXT case I chose. I had a quick look around but I couldn't find them. I did actually want a p182 for him as that's the case I would have for myself but it was about 11cm too deep for his existing pc desk. The hush does look rather slick and well made though so not a bad substitute if it fits.

Well, as always comments and sujestions always welcome :)

Hi,

The mobo is probably overkill, to sace some cash an Abit IP35 will perform virtually the same for fasr less money. I would have to suggest swapping the PSU for a Corsair HX520, and the graphics card for an 8800GT. Other than that it looks like a good basis for a system, although the 4Gb of memory thing seems like a waste of cash, but if he's going to upgrade soon I suppose you may as well

I've made a couple of changes but I'd go for something like this as it will be very capable and offers decent overclocking potential as well. I don't know the dimensions of the case though so I've just left it in. However the Lian-Li PC7+ might be worth a look. :)

Ok cheers guys. I'll just look over that mobo psu and the 8800gts 512mb. The 8800gt btw I'm staying clear of simply due to its one slot cooling solution and the temps I am seeing reported.

THe 8800GT may have high temps, but the cooler works. It has to work otherwise they can't sell the product :p

Will he be overclocking the Gfx? That's when it will need a better cooler...

The abit seems like a nice mobo. a brand I like too. Asus seems to have left a bad taist in a few of my friends mouths recently too so I may well go for that instead. Will track down a review or two over the next few days when I get a chance. Bit of a shame it has just the one PCIe slot and I'm guessing its 1.1 btw? have heard that most 8800gt have had issues with some PCIe 1.1 mobos. One other question whats the 4pin molex connector for just above the PCIe x1 slot?

What does the Corsair PSU have over the OCZ? they booth seem very quiet. the Corsair is modular I know but I'm not sure if he really needs that. I dont think its going in a window case and I can tuck cables away with the best of them :P only ask as its £20 more and 80watts less. didnt have time to check all the finer specs mind..

As for the 8800gts 512mb I'm pretty much sold on that already tbh :P

will look at that optical tomorrow as Im really fooked at the moment

oh,no overclocking i may sort the q6600 at some point in the future for him but not gfx card. if i got a 3870 for him i would have clocked that as they just seem to do so, so easily and keep so cool. ok max resolution will be a stunning 1280x1024. not the most demanding i know but i may be taking a closer look at his monitor to see if he can upgrade as im fairly sure its holding his gaming back some (uber cheep tbh)

He may up his monitor at some point as it's not the best and the way textures are going with games like Chrisis im not really sure that 256mb of ram even cuts it at 1280x1024 with highest settings. Which is what he will be wanting out of this tbh.

Also I have not seen any 256mb 8800GT cards about and I think it may well be a while untill we see them with the 512mb versions currently being in such short suply
