New SPec machine for Ubuntu

I am lookign to build a new machine mainly to be used for Ubuntu and possibly windows.

Any suggestions, I assume going for a quad core is a no no with various kernal panics

Looking about £400 or so not fussy on a good case as long as the insides are all okay
And obviously it has to be Nvidia.

Quad core is a yes yes.

How much graphics power does it need? Is it just for basic desktop/media work or will you be running heavy 3D apps/games on it?

If you don't need that much horsepower, integrated Intel graphics cannot be beaten since the official drivers are FOSS and already in the kernel.
