Although yet again I'm stunned by the quality of Daily Mail reporting, the Goliath Bird Eating Spider has been known about for a very long time. I'm pretty sure we're talking about nearing a couple of centuries here so it simply cannot have been discovered by these scientists in the past 20 years. Although with that said there are some interesting species highlighted there, I'm just not convinced that they're all as novel as is being painted though.

The giant spider is the Goliath bird eating spider (theraphosa blondi) and is the largest (by mass) spider in the world, reaching the weight of 170g and leg span of 30cm
