New SSD + PCI lanes

I'm looking to get a 2TB SSD to go alongside my 1TB NVME and 1TB SSD. My only m.2 slot is taken up by the NVME drive but I was wondering if I was to purchase a 2TB NVME drive and use a PCI adapter for it, would my 3070 take a hit in performance?

I have a Ryzen 5 3600, MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max, 3070 and the other mentioned drives installed. I'm not sure how PCI lanes work and how many are used/free.

The board has 1 x PCI-E 3.0 x16 slot and 1 x PCI-E 2.0 x16 slot. Along with 4 x PCI-E x1 slots.
 
This is very motherboard specific and I not sure how your mobo will handle it. In total B450 has 28 useable PCIe 3 lanes so 16 goto the gpu , 4 to the chipset and 4 to the NVME so this theoretically leaves 4 floating around for your use.

Would it not be simpler to just get a 2TB SATA SSD ?
 
Secondary x16 slot is electrically only x4 slot and connected to chipset sharing lanes with PCIe x1 slots.
It doesn't affect CPU connected primary x16 slot in any way.

Though with PCIe v2.0 it's 0.5GB/s per lane meaning 2GB/s overall.
So instead of expensive drive better to go for mid level drive.

I'll keep it simple and go with a standard SSD, seems easier and I've had 3 x SSD installed before.

Prices of SATA SSDs just aren't really lower than those of NVMes.
And if purpose is gaming, DirectStorage of future games requires NVMe/PCIe drive.

Adapter doesn't cost much
