So at the Steam Dev Day Valve unveiled a new prototype controller which is all about being able to grip in VR without having to press buttons, so you can effectively let go of the controller, not drop it, grip something in VR whilst just gripping the controller again.

From people that have tested it at the event, the controller is capacitative, so it knows how hard you are squeezing. They also mentioned that this current prototype wasn't intended as a replacement for the current Vive controllers. It's exclusively for prototyping out new interactions. It currently can't do per finger tracking, but they said they'd be working on that.
