I want to be able to use my ipod in the car, and I don't want an itrip type thing, so need some advice on stereos. I don't want to spend too much, preferably under £100. I also don't want anything that looks overly fancy, as I don't live in a great area so try to avoid having anything expensive looking on show.

Most importantly, I use the steering wheel controls all the time and definately don't want to lose use of them. Is it going to be possible to get a new stereo which works with them, without paying a fortune?

Can anyone tell me what sort of thing I should be looking for, preferably somewhere that will also fit it for me, as I don't even want to try doing that myself. The car is an 05 clio if that makes any difference.

Thanks,

Siobhan x

Yep i've seen them in the superstores but they charge a fair % over on-line prices, if you do buy from Halfords (which i'd avoid) go armed with internet prices and see if they will match them.

Is there anywhere else that would fit them? I know that buying from the highstreet is normally a bad idea, but I'm too much of a girl to even think about trying it myself. Neither my boyfriend or my dad know anything about cars either, and I'm not sure how careful they'd be with a car that wasn't their own.

Local car audio shops / Pioneer shop / Yellow Pages and get some prices for fitting, it might actually work out cheaper paying more for the gear at halfords and getting them to fit it than it would getting it all from the internet then paying someone to fit it.

Problem is i can see Halfords selling that for £150+

I'd also advocate avioding Halfrauds. A friend of mine recently changed the stereo in her car and got it done by a small independent audio installer in Dunfermline (so not tooo far from you if you are willing to drive over this side of the bridge!) for about £130 (a similar but lesser specced stereo and fitting at Halfrauds was £280!).

I'll get the details from her if you want?

They don't have that specific model, but you're right that the only Alpine ones that are showing are £150+.
They have a Pioneer for £90:

I've also been looking at a Sony one

I like the idea of the "made for iPod" thing, and it looks nice and plain. Would it be an ok one to get?
The adapter kits seem to be about £30 from Halfords.

EDIT: My parents live near Dunfermline, so that's always an option. If you could get the details of the company that would be great :).

Having been looking into these myself a bit, I've noticed that there seems to be a couple of different methods for connecting iPods. Some of the cheaper ones just seem to use a standard AUX input with a cable from the iPod's headphone jack, which obviously keeps things simple but means you'll need to use the iPod to change tracks and stuff.

The more expensive ones seem to use a control unit which connects to the iPod's data connector, meaning you can change tracks via the headunit itself, see track info on the headunit's display, and a lot of them also charge it at the same time.

Couldn't get hold of my friend last night but have sent her an email. Let you know when I hear back from her.
