New sys Build issue

Hi all, first post so go easy on me please:eek:

I've just built a new rig and experiencing one major issue and a extremely annoying one to. So let me list my Hardware before I hit you with my issues.

MOBO: Asus P5E3 Premium 505 Bios.
CPU: Q9950 with a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme & Stock Compound with a Noctua Vortex 120mm Fan.
RAM: OCZ DDR3 1600MHz Titanium XMP 4GB 2x2, Using Profile #2.
PSU: CORSAIR HX1000.
GPU: 2xRadeon HD4850 in Crossfire, Using Catalyst 8.8 Drivers (Latest).
HDD: 2x Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB in Raid 0 Config.
OS: Vista 64 SP1.
Monitor: 2xBenQ 19", running Dual display Mode.

1, The first problem that I'm having is that the Desktop will just Freeze and become UN responsive. It does not matter what I do, It could be just Idle and it would just freeze???? I must admit I have not installed any monitoring programs, but have observed the CPU and Mobo temps in the Bios and they both average about 46c without load, only being in the Bios. I also must confess I did use the whole tube of thermal paste on the H/S and CPU:rolleyes: I'm not sure if thats whats causing the problem? But just thought I would throw it in the ring.

2, The other issue is with the Hard drive and if it is the right config? I am experiencing slow program install responses, but once the programs are installed they load super fast, I find that my laptop installs and uninstalls programs quicker than these super fast drives.

Sorry for the long spew but I'm not impressed. My old P4 setup was more stable than this.:mad:

lol, ok well a whole tube of thermal paste!!!!!!!!!!!!

god lol, i could kinda see that been a little bit of a problem tbh, if the paste has got onto the pins etc
 
you used a WHOLE tube of thermal paste:eek:

you are only suppose to use a tiny bit, as it is suppose to fill in the microscopic ridges between the heatsink and the cpu surface to help heat transfer. many will tell you here more is less.

what are your voltages set to?

what tempertures are you getting from your CPU?

All stock settings, I know what a W@@@@r I am, it all went a bit **** up.

46c CPU but only taken from Bios.

Hey at least I'm honest.

Felt so ashamed that I just took the Mobo out and took the H/S off and cleaned off the the WHOLE tube of compound from the chip and heat sink.

But seriously, if you can still take me seriously:D would this have been the problem or would there have been some other issue at work here? I have heard that the Radeon drivers (Cats) have issues with dual monitor setups.

Any feedback on the HD question, as this was my first dealings with a Raid setup.

weird monitor setup, wouldnt you be much happier with a nice 24" screen at 1920x1200 res?


and just another, you used a WHOLE TUBE of thermal paste?!??!! :p
 
I bought some new Thermal Grease, Arctic Silver 5, and no I did not use the whole Tube, I used about a grain of rice.

Put it all back together, but the computer keeps freezing? Started to do a fresh install of vista 64, and it froze during installation.

Is my CPU no good?

Please I know I was a ...... but could any one give me a insightful answer

Are you running anything overclocked?

Are you sure you are using a Q9950 intel cpu? (I don't think this actually exists).

It is well worth checking your load temps if you are using a quad core, and maybe reseatting the cooler again, as if your cpu is really overheating it will result in the problems you describe.

What strip size are you using with your RAID 0 setup (not that that should effect stability). You should really try and run a hard drive benchmarking tool if you can succesfully install an OS, such as HDtach or HD Tune. Maybe try an install without using RAID, these drives arn't exactly slow by themselves and some people dispute how much benefit you get from using RAID on a desktop PC.

This is unlikely but i once had a problem where a pc would freeze when it was on the desktop, and it turned out to be the motherboard BIOS battery, i only released after it started getting checksum errors during startup, replacing the battery solved the problem.

Let us know how it goes :p.

Thanks for your reply jak731, sorry I was so long in getting back to you, but it was because I did some tests on the memory to find that all four sticks failed Memtest86, and even when I tried a stick at a time it would fail the tests.

I sent them back to Overclockers for them to be tested, and they also found them to be faulty sticks, and are sending replacements out to me as we speak. I find it very strange that all four modules were no good? never had a single problem with memory what so ever in the past, are OCZ prone to memory failure?

In regards to strip size, I just went with the performance setup size, 128 I think not sure? I def know it was the largest size. Do you have any recommendations.
