If anyone has a spare moment could you pass a comment or two on the following setup for a new system?
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 (2.4GHz)
MB: Asus P5K Deluxe WiFi
Cooler: Scythe Infinity Heatpipe CPU Cooler
RAM: OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-5400C5
PSU: Seasonic S12 Energy+ 550W Silent ATX2.0
Case: Antec P182
A couple of notes:-
No hard drives and DVD reader/writer in the above list as they will come across from the current system.
I will most likely go for Vista x64 - and if not I'll scale back the RAM slightly. Although that being said I am contemplating 8GB RAM just for the hell of it
If I can sell my current system as a unit (except the hard drives and DVD writer) I will also need a graphics card (undecided) and a sound card (probably a[nother] Creative X-Fi of some sort).
I am hoping to run the CPU at ~3GHz (9x333), hence the PC5400/667MHz memory. Does anyone know how the OCZ 2x2GB kit clocks past its rated 667MHz (in case I get past the 3GHz OC)? I am not looking at extreme overclocking, though so if it doesn't happen, well, it doesn't happen. The price for that set is excellent.
I haven't entirely decided on the CPU cooler, and I realise the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme gets the thumbs up these days but it also has a reputation for needing to be lapped - and quite frankly I can't be bothered. So I want something that's flat and shiny off the shelf, despite the fact that I like the relative slimness of the Ultra 120 (compared to the Infinity).
No plans for CrossFire, but if the graphics card is not the very latest initially it will be upgraded at some point in the future.
There will be a few hard drives in it (5 or 6) - will the 550W suffice, or should I go for the 650W version? And if not Seasonic, then what are the recommended PSU brands these days?
I also haven't decided on which fans (case & cpu, if the stock cpu is 'no good') - it looks like I'll need 3 or 4 120mm fans for the case (2 front, one rear, optionally one top) and perhaps 1 or 2 120mm fans for the Infinity (for push & pull, but it may be located near enough to the rear exhaust fan to provide the same/similar effect).
Anything stand out as incompatible or just plain incorrect?
