I'm in a bit of a quandry.

I have a budget of around £1500 - £1600 ish to replace my 5 years old I5 720 @ 4ghz with a 7970 system. Using it mostly for gaming and home cinema.

I was looking at:

8Pack Approved - Elite Tier SkyLake Bundle: Intel Core i7-6700K @ 4.50GHz, Asus Z170 Maximum VIII Hero, 16GB DDR4 3000MHz, 256GB NVMe PCI-E M.2 SSD, OcUK Techlabs Extreme 240mm Hydro CPU Cooler

Zotac GeForce GTX 980Ti AMP Edition 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (ZT-90503-10P)

Samsung 1.0TB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E1T0B/EU)

Fractal Design Define R4 Midi Tower Case - Black

Which comes in at around £1670 and using my existing windows copy, 750W corsair PSU and 27" 1080 screen (upgrading when i get more monies).

But then I though it might be a little overboard for what I'm using it for and wondered the budget would be better spent on getting a lower specced full system and get a new 1440 monitor, and donating the existing system.

I may be way off base, but I'm not really up to speed on the newer tech but would like the system to last another 5 years. :)

Thanks for any and all advice.

I have a Corsair CX750M brand new PSU, although it is is only 80+ bronze. Does this make a difference?

If i switch this PSU for a M2 boot drive, stretch my budget, is this my best overall option?

The NVME SSD may prevent you using SLI in the future.

You should check whether that PSU is compatible with the motherboard - does it have the right connectors? Also, is it Haswell-compatible? Exactly which Corsair PSU is it? Some of them do not pass muster.

Yeah EVGA or superflower psus are outstanding. I prefer EVGA for the minimal toned down design. Corsair are pretty **** surprisingly with how popular they are. Kind of the Dr Dre beats of PSUS imho popular not for quality but name.

Edit : as above the 6700k has 16 pci lanes and could run into sli issues using a nvme drive

I'm thinking of popping down to OcUK on Saturday to pick up this order. It's at the top end of my budget, but if anyone could have a look see and advise me if there are any glaring errors or if I could make any worthwhile changes, it would be a great help.

The monitor is not yet set in stone, and I might leave it until I scrape a few more shekels next month for a better screen and make do with the 1080.

Personally i would get it if you want an m2 drive but note you may not the full potentiol of the drive due to limitations of the motherboard.

Thanks, every bit helps.

After a bit of searching would https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-213-SA be a better option?

For a gaming/home cinema pc I don't think they are worth the money. You can buy the 1TB version of the 850 EVO for the same cost as the 500GB EVO and 256GB SM951.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Samsung 1.0TB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E1T0B/EU) £269.99
Total : £279.59 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

YOUR BASKET
1 x Samsung 500GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E500B/EU) £149.99
1 x Samsung SM951 256GB M.2 PCI-e 3.0 x 4 NVMe Solid State Drive (MZVPV256HDGL-00000) £119.99
Total : £279.58 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

Hmm, food for thought.

I was under the impression the m.2 would give significant increased performance.

the 1Tb drive would be handy if I wouldn't benefit from the m.2

The SM951 is a faster drive but you are paying almost twice the price per GB of storage. I think for a gaming pc the 850 EVO is a very good choice.
If you don't mind paying the extra money for less storage then there is no denying that the SM951 is a fast SSD.

Thanks for all the help guys, I popped into OcUK today as it turned out i had a job only 20 miles away.

The changes to what I posted were I didn't get the M.2, I opted for a 1Tb SSD......the Cooler was only built to order so I got a corsair H110i......and i couldn't leave without a samsung monitor.

Building it was another story.....suffice to say the corsair PSU can take a ******* running jump into the nearest ******* river. Spent an hour swaping out PSU's and cables before I ditched the lot and used my old 650w PSU as a temporary measure.

At least I have the basics back and I can move on the optimisation.

**edit** oh yeah, i got a Inno3d hybrid 980Ti, don't hate me, if it all goes t**'s up and i have to use the RMA, i have the old 7970 to fall back on. fitting all the fans was a challenge though :/

Actually it a wise choice going for the 1tb SSD hope it was the Samsung. If so download Samsung magician software it awsome, Set overprovsing and also enable rapid mode.

Enjoy.
